The 1960s wheeled tortoise that's we've forgot

Among Italian and American collaboration cars, which usually apply the beauty of Italian design to the muscular body of American cars to produce a new great and fast car. But not so with the following concept car named the Chevrolet Corvair Testudo

This 1963 concept car looks very futuristic as a result of the design of a young talented automotive designer named Giorgetto Giugiaro who was still working at Bertone, a renowned Italian coachbuilder at the time.

The concept car is built on a modified Chevrolet Corvair Monza platform. As we have seen, the donor car used for this concept car has many interesting things to say, such as the only mass-designed passenger car manufactured by a well-known American manufacturer that has a rear-mounted air-cooled engine.

It was also the first GM-made car that had a unibody construction and the engine was originally tested in a Porsche 356. Then the astronauts of the Apollo mission were trained on Corvair-based moon rover in New Mexico and the car served as the basis for many other concepts, such as the 1961 Pininfarina Speciale and 1963 Monza GT, just to name a few.

At a glance, when viewed from the car concept that has quite an aerodynamic appearance, so it looks like this car can run up to speeds of 200 mph. But in reality, this concept car is powered by a 2,732 cc or 2.4 liters air-cooled engine which is only capable of producing power of 81 horsepower, so that the maximum speed that can be achieved is far below that number.

Uniquely this car does not apply the usual doors like most existing cars. To be able to enter the cabin from this 2-seater concept car, you should be opened the whole of the car canopy. Besides that, the car also has an interesting interior with a rectangular steering wheel, a pair of body-hugging seats, and the dials and buttons mounted on a one-piece, boomerang-shaped piece.
Maybe that's why this concept car was named 'Testudo' which also means 'tortoise'. The Chevrolet Testudo concept car was first introduced to the public at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show. Although the Testudo never made it to production despite some talks of a European-spec Corvair with a different design, its styling had an influence on the Lamborghini Miura and the Porsche 928.

Corvette Nivola designed and styled by Bertone

Many Corvette series have been built since it first introduced by American giant auto manufacturer, Chevrolet in 1953 ranging from the concept to production car versions. As we all knew that the first model, a convertible, designed by Harley Earl, was shown to the public at the GM Motorama in 1953 as a concept car. Since then the Corvettes continue till today, the 6th generation models.

One that built-in 1990 was a model named the Corvette Nivola may be considered Bertone’s homage to the most fascinating American sports car ever built the Chevrolet Corvette. The sophisticated mechanical unit of the ZR-1 was interpreted by Bertone in a European key. Bertone designed a special chassis to make a sporty "boat" with mid-engine.

The Chevrolet Corvette Nivola by Bertone was revealed at the 1990 Geneva Motor Show. The Corvette Nivola appeared six years after another Corvette concept from Bertone, the Corvette Ramarro.

The body of the Nivola came into being at the same time as the chassis, and the two components are closely integrated. The result is a two-seater coupé which can be transformed into a spider with the removal of the slender roof.  There are some really original touches, like the seats without cushioning (driver and passenger sit directly on the base of the vehicle), and the doors which conceal two ample baggage compartments.

The hydraulic-pneumatic suspensions allow for a vertical range of movement of 6 cm respect to the ground. All in all another ambitious project from the artistic and technological powerhouse of the Bertone Style Centre.

This mechanical layout made it possible to exploit all the power of the engine when accelerating and warrant perfect road-holding on bends. The name, Nivola, is after the famous driver, Tazio Nuvolari, nicknamed "Nivola", much admired by Bertone, who usually drove his cars dressed in yellow.

The Nivola was powered by the same engine used in the Corvette C4 ZR-1. However, in the Corvette Nivola, it was repositioned behind the passenger compartment in a mid-mounted location for better weight distribution.
The impressive 381hp engine was moved back behind the cockpit and teamed with a new ZF gearbox, thus achieving a balanced distribution of weight (40% on the front axle and 60% on the rear axle). Another Ray Courtney creations of 1950s

Some time ago we discussed the 1930 Excelsior KJ Henderson, a unique custom motorcycle built by Orley Ray Courtney in 1936. As quoted from Hemmings it was the first custom motorcycle that he made by using Henderson 4-cylinder engined motorcycle as its base. Apparently, it was not the first and last motorcycle built by him.

It turns out that in 1950, he made motorbike again in his spare time in his suburban garage on Harper Street in Pontiac, Michigan, just a few blocks from where Pontiac Silverdome is now located. The entire process of working to form all the fenders and side skirts and make saddlebags and surfboards took approximately two years and was done by himself together with his son.

The motorcycle frame which later known as 1952 Enterprise was made of 1 1/8 inch chromed steel tubing and designed to be able to carry an Indian Scout V-twin 45-cu.in. or 750cc engine. But other machines that also existed at that time such as the Harley K engine could also be installed on the frame by making a few modifications. To start the engine, it can use an electric starter or kick-start. The Indian engine is capable of producing power of 40hp at 5,000hp coupled with a 3-speed transmission system.

The handlebars are mounted to the second forward steering wheel, 10 inches in front of the original, and connected to the front fork by pulling the link. The front wheels have a single coil spring, with suspension limited by "snubber" ride dampener Indian motorcycle style. The spark movement is on the left handlebar, with throttle control on the right. The front fender has a 3-gallon gas tank, which allows the two-passenger seat to be mounted 10 inches more forward on the frame than other bikes of the era.

Then for the rear suspension mounted one coil-over-shock-mounted from the frame to the rear fender. Even though the ground clearance is high at 7 1/8 inch, the front seat position allows the bike to sit 3-inch lower than the current production bike and significantly lowers the center of gravity of the motorcycle. This makes the motor much easier to set in tight turns. 

The dimension of the Enterprise motorcycle is about 112-inch long with a 58-inch wheelbase and weighs about 580 lbs. It is 28-inch tall, the front fenders are 26-inch wide and the passenger seating area is only 14-inch wide.

The crafted rear saddlebags attached to the rear fender skirt makes the back of the bike 24-inch wide and gives the bike a ride-on-rocket-ship look. This motorbike uses conventional drum motor brakes, and fuel savings are advertised as 50 MPG on the highway.

The motorcycle was finished in time to be presented at the Detroit Motorama Show in 1952, and the company brochure was distributed under the company name Courtney Enterprise. The design caught the attention of many writers and design engineers in the early 1950s and was featured in the September 1952 Cycle Magazine and the March 1953 edition of Popular Science. But it is not known how many motorcycles like this have ever been made by Courtney Enterprise (while some said around three Enterprise motorcycles are known to have actually been built).

Now one of the 1952 Enterprise motorcycles is owned by Frank Westfall as well as the 1930 Excelsior KJ Henderson motorcycle. Actually, there are still other Enterprise motorbikes built-in 1956 using a 650cc BSA engine and transmission, but only one example is known to be built and used by Ray Courtney's son. But unfortunately, its whereabouts are unknown.😢

Titania Veltro, one of Franco Scaglione's most inspired designs

After presenting a rarely seen sportscar figure named 1970 Costin Amigo a while ago, and on this occasion we will again present the unique sportscar figure that once existed and perhaps will never be seen again because until today its existence is unknown.😢

And the sports car that will be discussed on this occasion is the Titania Veltro GTT 1500 Coupe, the only one sports car prototype ever made in 1966 by an Italian automotive company called Intermeccanica based on a design created by Franco Scaglione, the Italian renowned automotive designer at the time. As an automotive designer, he was very famous at the time, so it is not surprising that many cars in his design work have become legendary car figures to this day.

Yes, from Franco Scaglione's magical hand touch had given birth many legendary car designs such as the 1952 Abarth 1500 Biposto Coupe which is the first concept car from a series of the B.A.T. (Berlina Aerodinamica Technica) car models, and then the most beautiful car ever, Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale which made its debut for the first time on August 31, 1967, and many others.

This one-off prototype of the Titania Veltro GTT 1500 Coupe also known as 'Hairy One', and was shown for the first time at the 48th Salon de Turin in 1966. It appeared very elongated with a diminutive Vanwall-esque air intake, and also featured longitudinal slots in the hood as air extracts. And under its front hood lies a British Ford 106E engine, that made it able to run up to top speed was nevertheless 124 mph.

As quoted in the book titled 'Intermeccanica: The Story of the Prancing Bull' on-page of 66, the Titania Veltro sportscar did teach Franco Scaglione a lot about the emerging science of aerodynamics. Curiously, many automotive experts said that the car was similar to that of another great aerodynamicist, Englishman Frank Costin's Amigo of 1970. Both were aesthetically too long in the wheelbase, neither made it commercially, but both excelled aerodynamically by using production engines.

As mentioned before, this car has never been made into a production model by the Italian 'prancing bull' logoed car manufacturer, and sadly until now it is unknown where it is. And once again, strangely, there is not a single note that records and informs when and where this one-of-a-kind sports car was lastly seen.😢 Video below was not about Titania Veltro but another unique car designed by Franco Scaglione.👼

A heavyweight wooden Suzuki Jimny

If you often travel out of town, you will usually find miniature cars made of wood that are sold in souvenir shops. However, this is a different matter from miniatures, precisely in Bandung apparently there are some real vehicles that are made of wood. And who was the owner of those wooden bodied vehicles?

The owner named Fawaz Salim, a businessman, and owner of a timber company in the city called 'Equator Wood.' When you look at his collection it turns out he has made several vehicles out of wood. In the collection there are Suzuki Jimny LJ80 (in Indonesia, it usually called 'Jimny Jangkrik,' and 'jangkrik' means 'cricket'), then VW 181 or VW Safari, and there is also a wooden body Vespa scooter, etc.

The vehicles mentioned above can really be operated on the road like a vehicle in general. Because they all were built base on the original vehicles, just the body is changed of wood. Fawaz said that for the manufacture of wooden vehicles, it started from his fad and just trial and error.

The wooden-bodied Suzuki Jimny for example, its body is not from plywood, but really made of original wood of 'sonokeling' type from Kalimantan. According to Fawaz, the wood is originated from legal cutting and already has an official permit, due to the wood taken from the trees directly in the forest, so there's should have an official permit from Perum Perhutani (Indonesian Forestry Institutes).

Initially, Fawaz bought the original Suzuki Jimny for Rp.14 million (approx $970). But when the car arrived it turned out that the conditions were not as expected. So then he decided to replace the Suzuki Jimny's body with wood. But because the original body has been wrecked and can not be used as a benchmark. So finally he borrowed a similar car body from one of his colleagues.

In the process of working on the car body, there are interesting things, namely the wooden body making process done by 1 person only. According to him the making of this body is a quite complex process, so there is a possibility the body will not be finished if done by many people. There are many mistakes that can be happened, such as the wooden joints that don't fit, or to pull different the cutting line, and others.

Meanwhile, to form an intact car, at least 7 people are needed. Where other crews work on wooden bodies, while mechanic crews tidy up the car's legs, machinery, and electrical systems. After the car completed, turn out the use of wood on the car body made its weight increased heavier and according to Fawaz, the weight of this wooden car is around 2 tons in weight.

This was also expressed by crews who participated in the work of this wooden car, they said that if the original body only needed three people to lift the whole body. And if the wooden-bodied needs about eight people, even then only the back. It is estimated that the weight ratio of this wooden car is three times heavier than the original body.
This is possible because the 'sonokeling' wood type used is more hardness than the teak wood, and of course far heavier than a metal plate. According to Fawaz to realize this wooden-bodied Jimny, it takes a time about one and a half years until all is completed at a cost of more than Rp.200 million (approx over more $13,800).

Moscow-based garage made a steampunk styled BMW motorcycle concept

As we have seen today that design modifications always succeed in attracting the interest of automotive enthusiasts. Not only because it can bring a design that is more okay and new, even design modifications often provide inspiration for fans. But have you ever imagined if a BMW R NineT was modified in such a way as if it came from the post-apocalyptic era and rode by Mad Max?

The motorbike figure mentioned above can be seen on this unique BMW R NineT figure is built by Mikhail Smolânovym from Zillers Garage who is already known as one of the metal-shaping experts, so that the look of this motorcycle is so fierce.

Indeed, the appearance of the BMW R NineT looks very much different from the original version, which currently has a custom aluminum body with a steampunk, retro-futuristic style, and cafe racer. With almost all parts of the motorcycle covered by a new bodywork, only the wheels and cylinder head of the engine are visible.

Even the cockpit looks as if it merges with the gas tank, and also only has a tiny speedometer and buttons for the lights. Then for the front, visible on the motorcycle mounted a LED rounded headlight that looks modern in harmony with its new fairing.

While at the rear, the stern of this motorcycle appeared in the café racer style which is made like the wasp's tail and it can be pulled-back as access to the electrical system and USB port.

Then for the legs, this motorcycle gets a pair of custom rims and air suspension devices. So that when it stopped or being displayed, the bodywork position can be set to be so low that it looks almost touching the ground.

In the engine sector, everything is still in standard condition with a 1,170cc engine which is capable of spitting out 110 horsepower, except for the use of a custom exhaust system with the muffler look sticking-out next to the rear wheels.
As for finishing, the motorcycle is given a silver metal color that gives a solid impression and there is a BMW emblem as its true identity. As a result, the BMW R NineT really changed form as if it were coming from the Mad-Max era. Here's another bike called Krugger BMW K 1600 NURB that (We thought) appeared in the similar style.

Sleek Farago CF 428 Concept

We are still discussing unique-shaped vehicles. And on this occasion what will be discussed is one of the American unique four-wheeled vehicle concepts. The car, which was launched in the 1969s, has an exterior appearance inspired by the sleek-shaped of spacecraft that was popular at that time and has also inspired many other four-wheeled vehicles.

The Pontiac Farago CF 428 is the result of a styling study for the Pontiac Grand Prix in 1969. This iconic concept car was designed by Paul Farago from Carrozzeria Coggiola. As is known, that Paul Farago is an engineer and automotive designer who is highly respected with a variety of design works that have a significant impact on the world both in Europe and the United States who previously are known to have helped the design of Dual-Ghia.

This very special Pontiac Farago CF 428 concept car originated from the special request of John DeLorean, who at the time was Head of the Pontiac Motor, a division of General Motors. DeLorean asked Farago to create and build a unique and unusual concept car, which could be used to show and enhance the company's image in the eyes of the automotive world.

At that time Farago, who had just left Ghia and founded his own coachbuilder company with Sergio Coggiola named Carrozzeria Coggiola, and immediately made this concept car as their company first project. Finally, Farago presented the Pontiac Farago CF 428 concept in 1969. And of the car concept name known that the 'CF' is the abbreviation of 'Coggiola-Farago', while the figures of '428' represented the engine-used.
This rear-wheels drive prototype car is equipped with a 428 cubic inch (7,014 cc) V8 engine that is capable of producing power up to 370 BHP (272 kW). The first F50 replica that could pass on the Venice River

Italy is known to have many traditions, besides making supercars. It turns out that they make some of the best traditional lake boats, plus they are also a cultural and artistic hub of Europe. And on this occasion, we will discuss one of the Italian creations that combining all those elements above and then makes it very unique work.

The Ferrari brand is one of the many famous brands from Italy that has become iconic for their automotive tradition, it's proved of more than 16 million people joining the Ferrari's fan pages. But due to the selling price of one unit of a Ferrari is fairly expensive so that not everyone can afford it. No wonder so many people dream of owning these Maranello-made supercars.

To satisfy the desire to have a sports car, not a few people who conduct experiments even imitate one of the Ferrari car model shapes. If it's in the form of a four-wheeled vehicle, the easiest way to get it is to make a replica by using the base of the Pontiac Fiero or Toyota MR2. But a different thing was done by Livio De Marchi, who made a wooden boat that has a shape resembled the Ferrari F50.

Alfa Romeo 2uettottanta Concept

Alfa Romeo often collaborates with various designers to make their concept cars, like they did in 2010. To celebrate Alfa Romeo's 100th birthday and Pininfarina's 80th. The two then collaborated to realize a beautiful car named Alfa Romeo Pininfarina 2uettottanta, which was read by duettottanta.

The 2uettottanta concept car is Pininfarina's vision of how the next generation Alfa spider car should be. Besides that, the 2uettottanta represented the culmination of a long-standing partnership between the two Italian companies and paid tribute to the iconic '60s Duetto roadster.

How to spell the name of this concept car often causes confusion. The first character is not 2 as it is often considered but the capital letter D as written in the Renaissance. However the name has a meaning: 2 refers to a two-seat configuration, 2uetto for the influence of the classic Alfa Romeo Duetto model and ottanta is '80' in Italian (for how many years Pininfarina has been coming up with such stunners).

This concept car looks beautiful and elegant with the appearance of red bodywork inspired by the typical Alfa Romeo paint. Meanwhile, 2uettottanta has a width of 1,797 mm (70.7 in), length of 4,212.6 mm (165.9 in), the height of 1,280 mm (50.4 in), and has a wheelbase of 2500 mm. And the faces of the 2uettottanta concept, in particular, is not such a dramatic departure from current Alfa Romeo thinking. And from the side, and the rear, the surfaces are smooth, soft, flowing.

This car is equipped with an elongated turbocharged 1,750 cc four-cylinder engine, a power plant that evokes memories of the 1750 Veloce from 1968, one of many versions originating from the famous "Osso di Seppia" (Cuttlefish). Power is sent to the rear wheels via the TCT box. Another little jewel is the new design for the lever of Alfa's DNA adaptive chassis system.
