Itu sebuah karya yang memulai ilmu transplantasi seperti yang kita kenal sekarang. Bahkan, Dr. Christiaan Neethling Barnard - seorang dokter bedah pertama yang melakukan transplantasi jantung manusia dengan sukses- menganggap Demikhov sebagai mentornya.
Tapi Demikhov menjadi lebih terkenal karena percobaan transplantasi lain yang lebih gila: transplantasi kepala anjing! Setelah sukses melakukan transplantasi pertama dengan rekannya Profesor AG Konevskiy di Universitas Kedokteran negara bagian Volgograd, Demikhov mulai melakukan pertukaran kepala anjing-anjing.
