Boyd Coddington Ron Simms Custom One of a Kind Prototype Motorcycle

As automotive enthusiasts, of course, you will know Boyd Coddington and Ron Simms as famous figures who have produced many works in the automotive world.

As we all know, Boyd Coddington is an American hot rod designer, owner of the Boyd Coddington Hot Rod Shop which produces a wide range of custom forged billet styles made in the USA.

Meanwhile, Ron Simms is an American custom motorcycle builder, who has been building custom motorbikes for more than 30 years and runs his business, Simms Custom Cycles, in Hayward, California.

Then what if the two of them collaborate to build a motorcycle concept? Yes, these two well-known figures in the automotive world are known to have collaborated to build a concept motorcycle in 1996.

This concept motorcycle was built to compete with the similar design created by Arlen Ness. And also at that time they planned to build more using the same concept but were constrained by high production costs.

In our opinion, at glance, the concept design of the collaboration result motorcycle of Boyd Coddington and Ron Simms is reminiscent of the aerodynamic bodywork of the BMW R12 motorcycle made by Louis Lepoix in 1947. It's just our simple visual observation on the Coddington and Simms motorcycle bodywork.

As we can see, the figure of the collaboration-result motorcycle concept is extraordinary and clearly looks inspired by Boyd Coddington's typical hotrod style. The bodywork on this prototype motorcycle is truly special as it is completely made of aluminum. If the mass production of motorbikes is carried out, the bodywork will be made of fiberglass.

This red-painted (called 'Boyd Coddington red') custom motorcycle is powered by a 103 cu in (1,690 cc) Sputhe V-engine combined with a Sputhe 5-speed kicker transmission system and is equipped with a P&M braking system with dual floating front rotors. Furthermore, this motorcycle also has no speedometer, turn signals, and horn. It looks even more manly with legs equipped with solid double chrome wheels wrapped with Continental tires.

The bike is 1 of 1 and was sold to a collector in Denver, Colorado from whom the current owner purchased the bike in 2004. It has been ridden mostly around town with an occasional ride ranging in the 130 mile round trip range. The bike has been featured in several magazines and can be found in Ron Simms’ order catalog.

Needless to say, this custom motorbike attracts attention wherever it goes. Whenever it is parked, people gather around it even when it is parked next to the newest and most flashy bagger.

Mangusta, a fierce motorcycle that reflects the raging bull's identity

So far, the public knows that Lamborghini-logoed motorbikes are still only a concept on the paper. Although in fact the raging bull-logoed manufacturer ever once made a sports motorbike named Lamborghini Design 90 even if in the form of a prototype. The bike is known was the result of collaboration the Sant'Agata Bolognese-based manufacturer with a French motorcycle racing specialists of Boxer Bike (now named Boxer Design) and only 6 units ever made in 1989.

Recently there's a designer named Yasid Design, who is known not only as a vehicle designer but as an artist. He has many quite interesting virtual works that are born from his magic hand scratches and brilliant thoughts.

This time, he brought out a two-wheeled vehicle design bearing the raging bull badge and is gave the name Lamborghini Mangusta (an Italian word for 'mongoose'). Even though it had a name that had nothing to do with the bull as usual, but the design he made managed to embody the raging bull spirit. Because the mongoose is also a quite aggressive species.

According to the designer, this motorcycle was built on the basis of the Ducati Diavel. And the Diavel selection is said to be the perfect choice in creating a wild machine worthy of wearing the Lambo badge. Then the Mangusta aesthetic truly reflects the language of the Italian supercar brand, as it combines metal and carbon fiber to create a strong yet lightweight ride.

And the only thing that doesn't have a sharp curve is the seat. The reason is quite clear. As many would expect, this model gets an over-the-top style with angular bodywork with sharp edges. And some details of the body still embody its typical raging bull figures. Almost all of the body panels appear to be made of carbon fiber.

Furthermore, the Y-shaped LED headlights and taillight strips look sleek, seemingly inspired by the Lamborghini Vision Gran Turismo Concept revealed last year. The tank and seat are made to appear together, with a little sculpting at the bottom. Then, in the front is left open with no fender. Instead, there's the covers that adopting sharp corners to wrap the front suspensions.

Although taking the base from Diavel, the designer created a trellis frame which is quite elegant. Besides, the contrasting color with the carbon fiber clad cover makes it look more charming, also its carbon fiber panel hides most of the original motorcycle design elements.

Uniquely the belt drive device is still visible from the trellis frame to the one-sided swing arm. Then the bottom of this motorcycle looks quite attractive, where the front of the engine is closed neatly. Besides, the frame cover is made to extend to cover the single arm with a curved body sharply combined with a firm line like an Italian supercar.

While the other side covers the two-hole exhaust which is located right under the rider's seat. Designer is expanding the wheelbase to create a more elegant and elongated motor, but he hasn't said anything about the bike's technical specifications. Although there is no detailed information regarding the engine specs, it looks like it is based on the XDiavel S fierce engine.
It could be said that this model still relies on a conventional engine instead of an electric powertrain. Of the images of the Lamborghini Mangusta concept is seen wrapped in Reventon silver and Aventador yellow, meanwhile, Ducati's distinctive red color has been removed.

The monstrous sized motorcycle ever!

Sometimes, the big-motorcycle shouldn't have to be seen from its engine capacity. But, this is huge in real sense. Have you ever imagined before if there were motorbikes as big as a truck? In general, motorbikes have a length of no more than 2 meters and a handlebar span of more than 1.2 meters.
The world's biggest motorcycle ever made called Tower Trike, with a length of 3,078 cm and weighs over 4.9 tons. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/35kpIrX)
The motorbikes that will be discussed at this time really represent what we will call the real big-motorcycle. Yes, the size of its body is really big! The motorcycle in question named Tower Trike.

This is a giant motorcycle built by Jim Gesto, a truck entrepreneur who is used many of his times with large vehicles. Unmitigated, the Tower Trike Trike uses a truck chassis as the basis for its development.

As can be seen from a Youtube channel of Biker and Beards which features it as the largest motorcycle to ever run on the highway. Because of its size, this motorcycle has the size of a truck without a body, aka only the frame and engine. This monster trike is 268 cm high and 3,078 cm long and weighs about 4.9 tons. Even though it is the size of a truck, it only has one front tire, so then the American regulations classify it as a motorcycle.
See how big the Tower Trike is when it compared to a normal-sized Harley Davidson motorcycle. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/35kpIrX)
The rest, this giant motorcycle also has features like a motorcycle in general, such as handlebars, mirrors, fuel tank, front driver's seat, and passenger seat, then there is also a speedometer. Uniquely, the handlebars used have a mechanism like a car steering wheel and rely on the pedals for the throttles and brakes.
Like motorbikes in general, the Tower Trike also has handlebars, mirrors, fuel tank, front driver's seat, and passenger seat, then there is also a speedometer and tachometer. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/35kpIrX)
In order for the monster motorcycle whose legs rely on the Air Glide air suspension to run fast, a Detroit Diesel V-Block Supercharged 6V92 engine is used as a drivetrain, which can produce 335 hp with 1,020 lb-ft of torque. The power is channeled through the Allison HT 740 transmission so that it is able to encourage this motorcycle to go up to 135 kph.

The modifier also added a cross-shaped iron weighing 90 kg on the back of the motorbike. In addition, said as the vehicle's aesthetics of a kind of religious symbol, it also functioned as a roll bar for riders and passengers. For those of You who call Yourself as a real-biker and like big motorbikes as well, You can have this monstrous-sized motorbike for the US. $90,000 (approx. Rp. 1.3 billion) with its building time of about a week (but not including shipping fee to Your garage).
One more thing, if You ride on this big-motorbike, You shouldn't have to be arrogant on the streets. Because the others also have the same rights as You are, while on the streets.

A Portuguese-made classic scooter

As we all know, the scooter fever during its heyday in the 1950s to the 1960s resonated almost all over the world. It is not surprising that at that time the scooter demand in the market was very high so that many manufacturers from all over the world tried to meet those market niche as well as be able to achieve high profits, as obtained by the two Italian-famous scooter makers, Piaggio and Innocenti.
The Casal S170 Carina is the only scooter model made by  Metalurgia Casal, the Portuguese manufacturer starting in 1967. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/343062g)
In the past, we have discussed here the many scooters that have been produced by manufacturers from Italy, England, Germany, Russia, France, Spain, Austrian, Belgium, Switzerland, Swedish, Polish, Czechoslovakia, and even Japan and the United States. So this time we are talking about a classic scooter is ever made by a Portuguese manufacturer.
The Casal S170 Carina is so widely known in Portugal that it is not surprising if the police force in the country ever used it as the official vehicle for its members. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/343062g)
The scooter in question was Casal S170 Carina made by the largest Portuguese motorcycle manufacturer, Metalurgia Casal. The Aveiro-based company was founded in 1964 with João Casal as Managing Director, and at the time it noticed has a relationship with Zündapp, the German automotive manufacturer. It could be seen by several former engineers from that German manufacturer was employing there and one of them was Robert Zipprich, who was then appointed as Technical Manager.

Initially the manufacturer produced agricultural machines and the Zündapp-based 2-stroke moped engines. Those first scooter products were launched in 1967. In appearance, the scooter model which uses a 50cc engine and is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission system is very similar to the Zündapp R50 scooter. Although the physical form is similar to the German scooter model (because it was designed by Robert Zipprich, a former Zündapp engineer), the engine it uses is Casal's own making.

Regarding its name, the scooter is known internally by code of Casal S170 and then through the company's employees voting given a name as Carina, and turn out in the Aveiro area means "dear". These Casal scooter models are very popular in Portugal and are widely used by the public in there ranging from ordinary people to law enforcement officials.
The Casal S170 Carina three-wheeled model, there are parties who said that model was not original from the factory, it was a custom made. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/31cGK8Q)
As far as we know, the scooter models have produced around 7,000 units with 3 different models where each has little differences, and also there was a three-wheeled model, although there are parties who said that model was not original from the factory, it was a custom made.

Unfortunately, due to a disagreement between Casal and Zündapp regarding the scooter design issues and its engine, so then the production of the scooter was discontinued. And make the Casal S170 Carina was the only scooter model ever made by the company.😢
As far as we know, about 7,000 units of the Casal S170 Carina were produced within 3 different models which have a little differences. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/3duqYeB)
However, this company still produce other-kind of two-wheeled vehicles and not long after that, the Portuguese manufacturer launched several models of mopeds and motorbikes. And it is known that during the production period, this manufacturer has launched more than 30 models of mopeds and motorbikes.

This Portuguese company had grown rapidly in the 1970s to 1980s by conducting several collaborations with automotive business players from various countries in the world to make the brand more popular in the market and racing arena.
However, the company was finally fallen into bankruptcy in February 2000, due to weak sales of its moped and motorcycle products in the domestic and global markets. In connection with this, unfortunately, parts of the company's archives were destroyed.😢

Harley-Davidson Revival electric-powered motorcycle concept

Currently, electric vehicles are a trend that has been practiced by automotive industry players around the world today. This is also done by motorcycle industry players, and related to electric-powered vehicle products, the legendary American motorcycle brand, Harley-Davidson has also launched its first electric motorcycle called Harley-Davidson LiveWire back in the 2014
The Harley-Davidson Revival concept aims to deliver an electric Harley to appeal to the younger generations and designed by Tanner Van De Veer. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/33O1KEL)
Although it has received a lot of support and positive reviews, so far sales of the Harley-Davidson eco-friendly motorcycle have been less than satisfactory. This is probably because Harley-Davidson is still seen as a premium brand that has a quite expensive price tag for the younger generation.
The visual appearance of the Harley-Davidson Revival concept adds a fresher impression and instantly recognizable though at kilometers away from one whose seen it. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/3lEzGto)
This is compounded by the fact that the Harley-Davidson image is still associated with first-class motorcyclists and the perception that all its motorbike models are large and expensive. In short, some millennials would not choose Harley-Davidson even if they could afford it.

Seeing the unpleasant image attached to those American motorcycle brand, a recent graduate of the Industrial Design program at the University of Cincinnati College of DAAP named Tanner Van De Veer carried out a motorcycle concept design called the Harley-Davidson Revival Concept that might become a solution to the problem.
The futuristic Harley-Davidson Revival concept motorcycle is inspired by the Harley's old-board tracker style blends into a modern eye-catchy appearance so fit for Generation Z tastes. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/33O1KEL)
As quoted from Autoevolution, Harley-Davidson Revival is made with a minimalist design but remains muscular and iconic. The motorcycle concept still uses an electric motor as its powertrain, and has a minimalist and futuristic look. The design itself is inspired by the initial design of Harley-Davidson boardtracker style.
The futuristic Harley-Davidson Revival concept has a tank that is formed of transparent panels to carry a muscular profile echoed with the chunky battery slung below. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/30WTZKD)
The motorcycle also completed with features such as adjustable footpegs, handlebars, genuine leather seats and a few other leather accents, a minimalist instrument cluster and sleek LED headlights. However, the size of the motorbike is now made more smaller and compact than what is currently offering by the Harley-Davidson.
The Harley-Davidson Revival concept looks iconic with a premium touch that can be seen clearly from its accents and material selection. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/3lEzGto)
Then to save time in the battery recharging process, this motorcycle is also equipped with an exchangeable battery pack. In addition to the frame, the headlights are also designed to resemble the Harley-Davidson logo, which Van De Veer thought would make this motorcycle instantly recognizable though at kilometers away from one whose seen it. "Despite many changes, the Revival will remain an instantly recognizable Harley-Davidson motorcycle," said the designer.
An industrial vibe carries over to the emphatic swingarm and powertrain forms. Vintage influences include exposed dual shocks. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/30WTZKD)
In our opinion, this electric motorcycle figure is worthy to be considered to enter the line of production of Harley-Davidson motorcycles.😎 Because the motorcycle concept is only a design study of the DAAPworks 2020, it is not surprising if so far there is no sign of the famous American motorcycle manufacturer accepting those design ideas to be realized into its production version.😐

Did you know that Harley-Davidson ever made a boxer-engine models?

Harley-Davidson (HD) is a motorcycle manufacturer known for its V-twin engined cruiser motorcycle models. But who would have thought that this American manufacturer had actually made a cruiser-style motorcycle with a boxer engine that we usually encounter on motorbikes made by a German's BMW Motorrad.
During World War II, the U.S. Army asked Harley-Davidson to produce a motorcycle as good as BMW's side-valve R71, and here's the result, Harley-Davidson XA. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/3jOHwjz)
The boxer-engined cruiser motorcycle model made by the American manufacturer is the Harley-Davidson XA, which was born in the era of World War II. Before talking furthermore, it would be better if we first look the brief story of the Harley-Davidson XA birth.
Harley-Davidson WLA, another model beside the XA is manufactured as mainstay rides of American GI's during World War II. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/36Uf0to)
During the World War II situation at that time, previously it was known that Harley-Davidson produced military motorbikes called the Harley-Davidson WLA for the US. Army. However, it seems that the American military officials are not quite satisfied with the Harley-Davidson WLA performance in relating to the engine-heat problem, instead amazed by the performance of the BMW R71 used by the German military in various battlefronts, ranging of the heavy-snowy regions in Russia to wild-hot deserts in North Africa at the time.
1942 Harley-Davidson XA claimed to be able to overcome the heat engine problem on the Harley-Davidson WLA model. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/3nHhG3I)
Why is that? Maybe because the BMW R71 is used a boxer engine configuration couple with the shaft drive which is reliable for use on various terrains, is claimed not heat up quickly and easy to repair while used in the battlefield.
Testing the Harley-Davidson XA, that curious 'boxer,' flat-twin, shaft drive motorcycle designed and built for the US Army around 1942. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/36SiVH7)
Therefore, HD then studied carefully the various technical advantages of the BMW R71 and tried to apply to similar motorbikes to be built by them later. Shortly after, the American manufacturer introduced the Harley-Davidson XA model in 1942 which had similar features to the BMW R71, namely both using a boxer engine coupled with the shaft drive.
1942 Harley-Davidson XA had similar features to the BMW R71, namely both using a boxer engine coupled with the shaft drive. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/3jRPxnW)
The results were also pretty good, apparently the XA's boxer engine had the advantage that the oil temperature was claimed to be 56 degrees Celsius lower than the WLA model's V-twin engine. As quoted from Rideapart.com, the boxer engine with a capacity of 738 cc installed on the Harley-Davidson XA is capable of producing power of  23 horsepower and proper to make the motor run up to a top speed of around 104 kph.
With those boxer engine and shaft drive configuration capable make the Harley-Davidson XA run up to a top speed of around 104 kph. (Picture from: https://bit.ly/3jOHwjz)
As many as 1,000 Harley-Davidson XA units were produced in the period from 1942 to 1943. But unfortunately the United States Army did not adopt the XA model as their official military vehicle and prefer to take the WLA because it was cheaper.
It could be said that the top brass of the American military at that time is like a man is amazed to the enemy's grass yard seen greener than in their own yard. Although in the end, they choose the typical HD WLA production motorcycle of efficiency and financial factors. And the remaining unused Harley-Davidson XA units were sold to civilian consumers.
