Daimler seriously want to manufacture electric scooter

Did you remembered on the Daimler announcement about the electric scooter production plan in 2010 ago under the brand of Smart? There was a long development, now the certainty that comes after revealed the patenting documents of these products in Europe.
This is what Daimler’s Smart Electric Scooter would have looked like. (Picture from: http://adf.ly/1bRklq)
This news raised hopes back, because after the announcement, no longer the valid whisperings. Although, in 2012, the company announced it will produce a mini scooter in 2014, and sell directly on the spot. (Jump to the article).

Then the news sank again. The problem was, Daimler already tied up in collaboration with the electric scooter manufacturer Vectrix for its development. However Vectrix went bankrupt last year, and was predictable, the Smart eScooter project being death along with Vectrix. Let's see the video bellow;
Like smoke appear without fire, the expectation was pushed back when the European Union's Intellectual Property Office (an EU's institute of the product patenting) issued a statement on Smart eScooter. The institute began to publish the design with the Daimler's approval.

From the illustration, the design looks very similar to the concept, although there are some updates. Such as, there is a telescopic fork, as well as dismissed the concept model was wearing a single suspension. So also in the back, seemed newfangled dual swing arm, wrapped electric motor with the Smart logo.

There was a place to put the smart phone, not a display mounted tidy as the concept. Riders can use their own electronic devices to display information on the motorcycle. Nevertheless, remains there's a digital display is used to indicate the remaining battery life and speed. Other details, there are two piston disc brakes at the front, and some parts are considered to be more realistic for motorcycle production version.

Fuel-efficient with an old technology

In order to reduce the amount of fuel from motor vehicle use per unit of distance has become an obsession all vehicle users in the world. However, to make it happen is not easy, it takes research and the use of advanced technology.

However, an inventor in Texas was break the previous understandings and claims to have created a machine that can achieve amazing levels of fuel efficiency. He is Josh Macdowell of San Antonio, Texas, who believe that his machine creation can help the vehicle segmented of SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) can reach 100 miles per gallon (mpg) on the way.

The machine was made of combined a Stirling engine with thermophilic technology that can transform heat energy into electricity.

Actually, the Stirling engine was not a new technology, this technology was created with the arrival of the oil era and later abandoned because it was considered inefficient. However, this time when the energy crisis happen, the machine began to receive attention back.
Robert Stirling's original design was called the 'Heat Economiser', a device for improving the thermal and fuel efficiency of a variety of industrial processes. (Picture from: http://adf.ly/1bRabm)
Stirling machine was first invented by Robert Stirling, a Scottish priest in 1816. The original Stirling machine patent was contained a number of elements that are now known as Stirling cycle engine, consisting of a power piston, a displacer and a regenerator. The Stirling engine in its application using the hot and cold air exchange for the engine's power.

The Stirling engine used by Macdowell comes from a former NASA's machine that used on a vehicle experiment was done in the early 1980s. Originally the Stirling engine has a large size, but Macdowell has been redesigned to look more like a small four-cylinder engine.
In a Stirling engine, the power piston compresses air in the cold end of the displacer cylinder, which then shifts the air from the cold to hot end. The piston is driven back by the air expanding in the hot end. (Picture from: http://adf.ly/1bRabm)
Today, the Mcdowell concept has received scientific support from the researchers at Texas A & M University. And according to Dr Mirley Balasubramanya, a mathematical physicist at Texas A & M University recognizes Macdowell's concept as a good idea.

Along with the machine design patenting, now Macdowell is testing his invention on the hybrid electric car, which allows the driver to bring the vehicle to the average speed on the highway without the need for refueling.

Attempting to describe how significant his finding, Macdowell said the design is intended for the hybrid industry. Although it is used by a hybrid electric car, he was sure the engine can be used on the Ford F-150 pickup truck and got an efficiency at least about 58 miles per gallon.

The next plan, he will be driving a car that use these machines on a trip of about 2,000 miles from the East Coast to California. Beside that, he hypothesized, by using the machine, he can make the trip only takes less than 40 gallons of fuel. Macdowell promised will documented everything during this trip and sent the findings to the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio to verify the results. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | DAILY MAIL]

Scientists discover an easy way to recycle plastic

Researchers may have found a way to eliminate plastic wastes are cheap and easy, by making it into liquid fuel and wax. Polyethylene (PE) is the most common form of plastic and can be found anywhere, such as a container for storing things, water bottles, plastic bags and much more.

Plastic is convenient, inexpensive, lightweight and strong, but also can not be destroyed as long as 500 to 1,000 years, and it becomes a problem.
In a major breakthrough, scientists have developed a new method to turn polyethylene, the most common form of plastic used in making grocery bags and bottles, into liquid fuels and waxes. (Picture from: http://adf.ly/1bPEUX)
"Most are not recycled. There is a large plastic trash in the Pacific Ocean and micro plastic granules scattered throughout the marine environment," said David Constable of the American Chemical Society.

The numbers reached 8 trillion micro plastic granules per day, and according to a research from Oregon State University. Although the grain itself is not dangerous, they absorb toxic wastes and pollutants end up in the marine environment, and from there they go up the food chain and then consumed by human.

Another problem is the difficulty of plastic recycling, is much more difficult than recycling paper or glass or metal such as aluminum.

The good news, the researchers may have found a way to eliminate plastic waste is easy and cheap, and converts it into fuel and wax.

The new research is reported in the journal Science Advances on Friday, June 17, 2016 which is part of a four-year research project by scientists from the University of Shanghai and the University of California, Irvine.

Zheng Huang, an organic chemist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that they have been doing a process called catalytic cross alkane metathesis (CAM), which uses carbon-based molecules called alkanes and hydrogen to break down the hydrocarbons that make polyethylene.

"After facing many cycles of CAM with light alkanes," said Zheng, "PE will eventually be converted into short hydrocarbons suitable for transportation fuels."

He told VOA that the fuels can be used in diesel engines and light alkanes that are used to break up the PE "very cheap and widely available."

The best part is, according to Zheng, that "catalysts that are used can tolerate a variety of additives in plastics."

But he said the process was not perfect. For example, once all the CAM cycle, not a lot of fuel or wax that is left to be extracted.

The result is "not enough to recycle large quantities of plastic waste," he said. But "we believe the system more efficient and lower cost catalysts, this technology will achieve the application of PE plastic waste degradation in the large scales."

That is what is being pursued by him and his team. They are also trying to see if this process can be implemented on other types of plastic. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | VOA NEWS]
