A Mobile-based devices can detect cancer cells

A new tool based phones can diagnose the presence of cancer cells in a blood sample. The technology can be taken anywhere, can be used in remote areas where advanced equipment for cancer detection is not available.

Cancer diagnosis usually involves the cells experts called cytologists, high-powered microscopes and other equipment. Cytologists look for cancer cells in blood or tissue samples obtained by biopsy. The technology and skilled personnel are often not available in remote areas, especially in Africa or Asia.
The graphic above shows how a blood sample can be mixed with microbeads that bind to cancerous cells (labelled A). When these are placed in a clip on module (B) that attaches to a iPhone camera (C) the microbeads produce distinctive diffraction patterns when they clump around a diseased cell (top right). But researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston has streamlined the process of using a mobile phone that can be used by anyone who has been trained. This system is called 'D3 Cancer Detection System'.

In a study involving 25 cell samples from women suspected of having cancer of the cervix, a small camera phone appears with the initial diagnosis in 45 minutes. And it was done with nearly 100 percent accuracy, differentiate "high risk" than "low risk" and non-cancerous cells.
The images above show how the microbeads (small white circles in bottom images) clump around cells (dotted lines) in samples that were found to be of high risk of cervical cancer (left) low risk (middle) and benign (right). (Picture from: http://dailym.ai/1DKimtw)
This test can be done by anyone even at home, using a small sample like drops of blood, and not expensive, only cost about US $ 1.80 for the module, bacteria and small beads. This article about D3 Cancer Detection Systems was published on Monday, April 13, 2015 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | VOA NEWS | DAILY MAIL]

The farthest planet from Earth discovered

Galaxias, Via Lactea, or Milky Way, where our Earth lied, still a wilderness that has not been revealed by the human's sophistication knowledge today. Not to all the mysteries unfold.

US space agency (National Aeronautics and Space Administration/NASA) has recently discovered the gas planet lied on 13,000 light-years away from Earth. The findings obtained using the Spitzer Space Telescope are used in conjunction with ground-based telescopes, the Poland-based Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) in Chile.

One light year is equal to 9,460 billion kilometers. With a distance of 13,000 light-years away, the finding became one of the farthest known planets. These findings indicate that Spitzer, from its location in space, can be used to help uncover the puzzle of how the planets spread throughout the Milky Way's spiral shape is flat. Are the planets are concentrated at its center? Or equal to the rim?

Spitzer is at a distance of 207 million kilometers away from the our Earth. "We do not know if the planets are more likely to be in the galactic bulge or on the dial. That's why such observations it becomes very important," said Jennifer Yee, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, Massachusetts, as quoted from the Spitzer Space Telescope site on Wednesday, April 16, 2015.

Warsaw OGLE Telescope located at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile, scanning the sky with a method called microlensing - events that occur when a star passes in front of the other. If the foreground star happens to have planets in orbit around it, the planet could be a trigger point (blip) in the radar screen monitors.

Astronomers using the blip to find and perform the planet characteristics within tens of thousands of light years in the galaxy bulge - where star crossed more often. Meanwhile, the sun is shining on the Earth is on the outskirts of the galaxy. Microlensing technique has so far resulted in 30 findings of the planet. The farthest within 25,000 light years.

"Such experiments have detected the planets around the Sun to which is almost in the center of the Milky Way," said another study author, Andrew Gould of The Ohio State University, Columbus. Microlensing equip more than 1,000 near-Earth planets that have been discovered by the NASA's Kepler mission. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | SCI-NEWS.COM]

This Rhino is guarded by heavily armed rangers

Sudan is the name and for 24-hours, he was always accompanied by three or four heavily armed rangers in Kenya. Sudan is not a president, millionaire, or terrorist leader. Sudan is a 40-year-old rhino.

That makes him so tightly guarded, because Sudan is now the only male Northern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) which left in the world. Well, if Sudan dead and Northern White Rhinocheros, certainly extinct forever.

This rhino got a special 24-hours protection, because they feared becoming the target of poachers. That means, wherever and whatever Sudan is, he will get an escort from his personal bodyguards.

As released by The Huffington Post, whether or not this type of rhino sustainable, depending on Sudan and two female of Northern White Rhinos in Ol Pejeta, the center of rhino conservation in Kenya.

Ol Pejeta is the only hope, that the Northern White Rhinoceros can be sustainable. Not only guarded by the riflemen, Sudan also has been fitted with radio transmitter. The rhino’s horn has also been removed as an added precaution.

"The only reason his horn has been cut off is to deter poachers. If the rhino has no horn, he is of no interest to poachers. This is purely to keep him safe," said Elodie Sampere, conservationists at Ol Pajeta

The rhino hunting is one of the most massive in the world. In 1960, there were still 2,000 Northern White Rhinos in the world. Compare the condition in 1984, which lived only 15 individuals. Understandably, rhinoceros horn of this kind, is rumored to be sold for US. $.30k per pound.

Northern white rhinoceros is one of two species of the White Rhinos in the world. In addition to the Northern White Rhinos, there are Southern White Rhinoceros. For Southern White Rhinoceros, the population was estimated was not too rare, which has a population of about 17,000 in 2008 sensus.

As for the Northern White Rhinoceros, the hope is stay on Sudan. Prior to this, a number of artificial insemination efforts, including those conducted at the San Diego Zoo, the United States failed. While the other Northern White Rhinoceros in Czech Republic Zoo, died in December 2014. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | THE HUFFINGTON POST]
