Artura: McLaren’s First-Ever High-Performance Hybrid

Silent Fury - In the ever-evolving landscape of high-performance vehicles, automakers continue to push the limits of engineering and innovation to create machines that are faster, lighter, and more efficient. Just when it seemed that the boundaries of combustion and hybrid technology had been thoroughly explored, McLaren stepped forward with something that not only redefined what a supercar could be—but also what it should be in the modern age. Enter the McLaren Artura, a masterpiece that fuses cutting-edge hybrid performance with the unmistakable DNA of a British engineering legend.

Launched in 2021, the McLaren Artura marked a turning point for McLaren Automotive, becoming the brand’s first series-production hybrid supercar. Following the debut of the McLaren Sabre in December 2020, this new model was more than just another addition to the lineup—it represented a strategic evolution. Designed and engineered in Woking, England, the Artura embodies the brand’s commitment to combining exhilarating driving experiences with a new level of environmental consciousness.

At the heart of this revolutionary car lies the all-new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA), an advanced carbon fiber chassis developed specifically to accommodate the demands of hybrid systems without compromising the agility McLaren is known for. This lightweight platform, along with bodywork crafted from superformed aluminum and carbon fiber, allows the Artura to maintain a dry weight of just 1,395 kg. The result is a stunning power-to-weight ratio of 488 PS per ton—numbers that tell only part of the story.

Visually, the Artura is a bold step forward, balancing aggressive aerodynamics with sculptural finesse. McLaren’s design director Rob Melville ensured that every line on the vehicle served a functional purpose. With carefully contoured surfaces shaped through a patented sculpting technique, the need for additional aerodynamic elements like active fins was eliminated. Functional side and top vents improve airflow and cooling, all while preserving a sleek silhouette that stretches over 450 cm in length and less than 200 cm in width, with a wheelbase of 264 cm.

Performance-wise, the Artura doesn’t just raise eyebrows—it resets expectations. Under the sculpted rear deck lies a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 petrol engine paired with an electric motor. This combination generates a staggering 680 PS (671 bhp) and 720 Nm (530 lb-ft) of torque, delivered through a new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission system. It can rocket from 0 to 100 kph in just three seconds, 0 to 200 kph in 8.3 seconds, and 0 to 300 kph in 21.5 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 330 kph.

Crucially, this isn’t just raw power—it’s also about smart energy use. The hybrid system includes a 7.4 kWh lithium-ion battery made up of five separate modules. In EV mode, the Artura can quietly cruise up to 30 km, ideal for short urban commutes or low-emission zones. Charging is equally forward-thinking: using a standard EVSE cable, the battery can reach 80% capacity in just 2.5 hours. Additionally, the system is capable of recharging via the combustion engine, depending on the driving mode selected.

Supporting all this innovation are McLaren’s hallmark handling characteristics. The Artura rides on forged lightweight wheels19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rearwrapped in custom Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires. A powerful braking system featuring carbon-ceramic discs and aluminum calipers ensures confidence and control at high speeds while maintaining a lightweight setup ideal for track conditions.

Inside the cabin, the Artura offers more than just a premium feel—it delivers a tailored experience. New Clubsport seats provide both the adjustability of a touring seat and the support of a racing bucket, easily fine-tuned with one hand. Key vehicle controls are integrated into the steering wheel, keeping drivers focused on the road, while an 8-inch HD touchscreen supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Over-The-Air updates. There’s even an advanced theft tracking system available in select markets.

Available in 31 exterior color options, the McLaren Artura is not just a feat of engineering but also an expression of individual taste. Priced from £185,500 or around $225,000 at launch in Europe, it was aimed at those who crave both thrill and progress in their automotive experiences. Deliveries began in the latter half of 2021, signaling the start of a new chapter for McLaren—and perhaps for the entire supercar segment.
By blending tradition with transformation, the McLaren Artura stands as a symbol of where performance is headed. It's not merely a glimpse into the future—it’s a bold, roaring statement that the future is already here, and it's wearing a McLaren badge. *** [EKA [09032021] | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | AUTOBLOG | CARANDDRIVER | MOTORAUTHORITY ]
