NASA's spacecraft ready to encounter the asteroid Bennu

Researchers at the US space agency - National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is mounting the last series of spacecraft to study the asteroid Bennu in 2018 in order to get the clues about the origin of life.

"A few more days, the installation of rocket parts finished and we will bring the spacecraft to the Atlas V to begin the journey to Bennu and returned to Earth," said Dante Lauretta, principal investigator for the event, at the Kennedy Space Center, Cape Kanveral, United States.

The activity worth one billion US dollars, it is known by the OSIRIS-REx, and the rocket is scheduled to launch on September 8, 2016 from the Cape Kanaveral in Florida.

The solar-powered robotic rocket, made by Lockheed Martin, and designed to deal with asteroid 1999 RQ36, known as Bennu, for two years for mapping and research. Later, the rocket's robotic arm was used to obtain a sample for examination when it back to Earth in 2023.

Researchers are interested in studying the mineral and chemical materials in asteroids. Because they argued similar asteroids ever hit the Earth and is believed to contain organic material and water that allows life.

"We hope to find the material that preceded the age of the solar system at this time," said Lauretta. He added, the physical samples from the Apollo missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s are still widely used today.

"By understanding the chemical elements down to the molecular level, we have to get more samples and bring them to the best laboratories in the country and around the world for the next generation of knowledge," said Jason Dworkin, one of the mission researchers.

Meanwhile, Hayabusa is the first Japanese spacecraft that managed to bring back physical samples of the asteroid to Earth in 2010. Along with sample devices, the Osiris-Rex rocket is also equipped with cameras and sensors, in order to learn the power that influence the direction of the asteroid's orbit.

However, the rocket launch plan for the right to deal with Bennu quite difficult because the prediction calculation is not a perfect science, Lauretta said.

"In fact many unanticipated challenges, such as other power such as solar radiation pressure, even heat emission from the asteroid may affect the movement of the rocket," said Lauretta.

That mission will provide new insight for astronomers to determine the influence of the Sun's heat on the movement of rock in space, said Dworkin.

That information is important to know in order to protect the Earth from asteroids that might hit the planet in the future, he added. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | SPACE]

The mysterious object found in the Solar System

A mysterious object found in the Solar System. Until now, nobody knew its identity. The object named Niku. Scientists initially suspected that the object was a dwarf planet, entered in the class of trans-Neptunian objects.

However, during the analyzes, scientists are even more confused. Normally, the object of which is smaller than the planet can be called a dwarf planet or even an asteroid. However, Niku could not be classified in both.
This is an artist's concept of a craggy piece of Solar System debris that belongs to a class of bodies called trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) with nickname Niku. (Picture from: http://adf.ly/1dNT34)
For the first, Niku has a different orbital plane 110 degrees compared to the orbital plane of the other celestial objects that orbit the sun. Even odder, Niku orbit direction opposite the direction of the orbit most celestial bodies in the Solar System. When the other celestial bodies orbiting the Sun in the direction of rotation, Niku is precisely the opposite.

Indeed, Niku is not the only one who has the opposite or retrograde orbit. However, due to differences combined with its orbital plane, it is difficult for astronomers claimed that Niku is a dwarf planet.
There's an unidentified object in a strange orbit past Neptune named Niku, and no one can explain it. (Picture from: http://adf.ly/1dNSny)
Then, whether Niku is? One of the alleged, Niku is created from the collisions with other mysterious celestial bodies and influenced by other forces outside the Sun or planets in the Solar System.

Another hypothesis, Niku is a member of a group of celestial bodies that orbit coincidentally similar to the Solar System.

There are also allegations that the Niku is celestial objects associated with the presence of all nine planets in the solar system is suspected, but unconfirmed yet.

Which is correct? Until now scientists have not been able to confirm. However, the uncertainty that provides new passion for astronomers. They are encouraged to investigate further.

"It shows that there are many things in the outer Solar System were not yet fully understand," said Matthew Holman of the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who discovered Niku, as quoted by Science Alert on August 11, 2016.

"Whenever you find oddities in the outer Solar System, it's interesting because in some ways is a sign of a new development," said Konstantin Batygin of Calfornia Institute of Technology.

Niku discovered by the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System 1 (Pan-STARRS 1) on Haleakala, Maui. This object 160,000 fainter than Neptune. Allegedly, its diameter was less than 200 kilometers alias less than half the width of the island of Java.. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | SCIENCE ALERT]

Another classy Italian board tracker from Medan

Wanted a custom retro motorcycle, had made Efisada Ray who originally liked to use the Vespa scooter is now a little turnaround.

"What is clear, wants to relieve boredom at Vespa custom modifications, and certainly want to be different and matchless," said the man who is familiarly called as Rey Bulang. Do not want too much trouble, this time the figure of the retro style board tracker motorcycle becoming the inspiration for his scooter modified project.

By taking the base of the 1980 Vespa P150X, he handed process of modification to a Medan-based modification workshop named CBR RPRS (in Jl. Sibolangit – Medan) to turn his scooter into a tracker board style motorcycle. The result of this modification is named 'Scootie Tracker.'

Almost all parts of the scooter disarmed and left the engine only. The modification process begins with the frame making of the tubular pipe size ¾ dim. To sharpen the concept of board tracker, do not forget the frame construction deliberately made rigid, plus the application of the wheels size 21-17 at the front and rear.

Then, its fuel tank was uniquely crafted by hand from galvanized plate with a thin profile and long to follow the back-bone. To be comfortable while riding, it uses an intact mono shock of Yamaha Jupiter MX to handle damping of shocks when on the streets.
To enhance the look of the scootie tracker, is painted in black on all over its body. But there is something unique on the motorcycle, namely the existence of a 'Jack Daniel' bottle flanked by two headlights at the front. No explanation, it seems that bottle intended as an accessory to make gallant these motorbike.

D'Box CC, an air worthiness detector

A turquoise rectangular box with 10x10x10 cm size was not a regular thing. The object named "D'Box CC" was an air purity detector that participated in the International Exhibition for Young Inventors (IEYI) in China, in July, 2016.

The box inventors are Aan Arian Nanda (17) and Feriawan Tan (17), the students of 1st Senior High School (SMA 1) in Tarakan, North Kalimantan. The inventor was claimed to be inspired from the forest fires that swept in Kalimantan in 2015. Departing from that reason, the young man duo since November 2015 until May 2016, together with the guidance counselor at the school designed a simple air worthiness detector at minimum cost.

"The making of about six months. From the November 2015 until May 2016. The longest phase was doing research, trying to find components. Then to determine what sensor is used. As for the device alone, it took three days overtime," said Feri.

A number of components that they use include the fan to set the air supply, battery, LCD, LED, USB cable, small speakers and other components. In addition, they also create an application that serves to show the analysis of the air feasibility in real time in the form of a graph, which is accessed through the computer.

As told to Antara News, Feri explains how the "D'Box CC" works. "This is a fan that serves to compress the air. In the (rear) fan there are sensors that read the data content of CO and CO2 in the air," he said.

"After reading the data, the sensors transmit data to the micro, as the brain. From the brain that send data to the system. The system was the LED indicator and LED screens to display the data. When using a USB cable, here is the application. Thus, the data passed to the application," said Feri.

Then, when the CO2 levels in the air beyond normal limits (greater than 500 ppm) and CO (12.4 ppm), then there will be an alert sound through the speakers. Feri said, they spend around Rp.529 thousand to create this device. Nevertheless, he hopes eventually D'Box CC can be mass produced, so the selling price could be cheaper.

"In the future we want this device mass produced so the price could be cheaper. We also want to be useful for many people," said Aan.

D'Box CC some time ago also won the awards from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia/LIPI) and is currently in development as well as to obtain a patent.

"We eventually want this device is more portable, wireless and can be accessed through mobile applications," said Feri. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | ANTARA NEWS]

Frenchman turns his busted Citroen into a makeshift motorcycle

Are you remember to an old television series, MacGyver? Whiz character played by Richard Dean Anderson is known very smart and have the ability to assemble variety devices, even in desperate situations.

But this time, there are people who have the ability like that in real life. He is Emile Leray, a French man who has transformed a breakdown car into a motorcycle. Remarkably, Emile remodel damaged car into a motorcycle instead while in the house or garage, but when he got stuck in the desert with very limited equipment.

As reported by Carbuzz on Friday, July 6, 2012, Emile experienced those events occurred in 1993. At that time, he was driving a Citroen 2CV in the middle of the African desert alone.

Feeling preoccupied driving alone, Emile was spurring his favorite old car at full speed. But, unfortunately, the Citroen 2CV hit a large rock and suffered considerable damage. Almost desperate by the incident, plus because he was alone in the middle of the desert, Emile had thought to continue the journey on foot. However, the intentions undone, because the distance to the nearest village is still very far away to be reached by foot.

Did not want to despair, Emile tried to check the car's engine and remodel it with existing equipments. Only armed with half a liter of water left, he cut off one by one the car's frame with a hacksaw. By his persistence and expertise, finally Emile succeeded. And his beloved old car was transformed into a motorcycle, with the processing time for 12 days.

Then with his new motorcycle riding, Emile ended up in a nearby village. Once there, he was again confronted with the problem. Because he was later accused of being a rebel and imposed fines, for allegedly importing motorcycles without official papers.

Given there was no witnesses to verify the story as told by Emile, it could well fall into the urban myth. However, his makeshift Citroen two-wheeler is the real thing and an amazing piece of ingenuity MacGyver making him should be proud of.
