Flavanol-rich cocoa potentially dampen memory decline

A recent study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience showed memory decline with age can be mitigated by consuming cocoa that has a rich flavanol - a natural antioxidant that is also found in tea leaves and fruits and certain of vegetables.
Chocolate, or rather, the flavanol-rich cocoa compounds found in some varieties, may be linked to improved memory functioning in older adults. (Picture from: http://bit.ly/ZU9Jff)
According to researchers, this study provides evidence, if one of the components of memory loss associated with aging in humans due to a change in a specific region of the brain-dentate gyrus. Then, the form of memory loss can be improved with the help of diet.

"When we portray our brains of research subjects, we found a noticeable improvement in dentate gyrus function in those who consume cocoa beverages with high flavanol content," said Adam Brickman, lead author and a professor at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) in the United States.
The brain area outlined in yellow is the hippocampus; the dentate gyrus is shown in green and the entorhinal cortex in purple. Previous work, including by the laboratory of senior author Scott A. Small, M.D., had shown that changes in a specific part of the brain's hippocampus -- the dentate gyrus -- are associated with normal age-related memory decline in humans and other mammals. The dentate gyrus is distinct from the entorhinal cortex, the hippocampal region affected in early-stage Alzheimer's disease. (Picture from: http://bit.ly/10uU1s1)
In the study, researchers recruited 37 healthy volunteers aged 50-69 years. These volunteers were randomized to receive high-flavanol drink (900 grams per day) and low flavanol (10 mg per day) for three months.

Results showed that the group who consumed drinks with high flavanol content was significantly better in a memory test.

"If the participant has 60 years of memory types at baseline, after three months they have an average age of 30 or 40 years types of memory," said Scott A. Small, senior author (CUMC) as reported by the ScienceDaily.

The researchers noted, the products used in the study are not the same as the chocolate, and they were careful to increased consumption of chocolate in an attempt to get this effect. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | SCIENCEDAILY | NATIONAL POST]

10 Prehistoric fish that are still alive today (Part-2)

Continuing the discussion of 10 prehistoric fish that are still alive today. Now we will enter the second part.

These are the fish that lived in prehistoric times, and managed to survive until now without much change in their appearance, so they are similar to fossils of their ancestors.... Here are the second 5-prehistoric fish,

6. Arowana
These fish are Including a group of ancient Osteoglossids, these fish already existed in the Jurassic period. Today, they are found in the Amazon, and in parts of Africa, Asia and Australia. Sometimes kept as exotic pets, arowanas are voracious predators that feed on small animals they can catch, including birds and bats. They can jump up to 2 meters into the air. In China, arowanas are known as "dragon fish" because of their appearance, and they are thought to bring good luck.

7. Arapaima
These are including close relatives with arowana, Amazonian arapaima is sometimes considered to be the largest freshwater fish in the world. According to early descriptions, this fish can grow up to 4.5 meters in length, but now, the individuals who are most like this is rare and the average adult arapaima found only 2 meter length. These slow moving predators and feed on small fish, and anything else that can fit in their mouth. An interesting feature of this fish is that they need oxygen to survive. Arapaimas harmless to humans and are often hunted for their meat, unfortunately, they are very rare nowadays. Although the arapaima seemingly appeared in the Miocene period, but they get much older family, the Osteoglossidae, and its origins can be traced back to the age of dinosaurs.

8. Hagfish
According to the fossil record, hagfish have existed for over 300 million years, which means they've been there long before dinosaurs ruled! Found in relatively deep waters, these animals are sometimes called slime eels, but they are not really eels, and actually, they also can not be said of the fish at all, according to some scientists. They are very bizarre animals in all things, they have a skull but no backbone, and they have two brains and almost blind. They feed at night and eat the carcasses of large animals that fell into the sea. They naturally produce mucus that damage the gills of predatory fish, as a result, they have virtually no natural enemies.

9. Lancetfish
Lancetfish clearly has a "prehistoric" appearance, with a grim face, sharp teeth in its jaws, and the screen on the back, reminiscent of some dinosaurs (although in lancetfish, the screen is actually a broad dorsal fin). Even its scientific name is also similar to dinosaurs name, the Alepisaurus ferox. Up to two meters in length, this predator is found in all oceans except for the polar regions, very greedy, they eat small fish and squid, and are also known to sometimes he ate members of its own species.

10. Sturgeon
Another survivor who survived the age of the dinosaurs, sturgeon, known as one of the main sources of caviar; due to overfishing, these unusual armored fish are endangered today. The largest sturgeon species can grow up to 6 meters, and the growth of the white shark.

They eat small animals from the sea bottom and pose no danger to humans, unless provoked (although they are big actually can kill people if they jump into the human body!) (Jump to 1st part.) *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES]

Austrian scientists noted major eruption on the Sun

Scientists from the University of Graz in Austria this week noted one of the most powerful eruption of solar radiation, which occurred during the past 10 years, resulting in interference of radio waves.
NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this ultraviolet-light image of an X1.1 flare erupting from the sun on Oct. 19, 2014. (Picture from: http://bit.ly/1x8O65G)
The eruption is recorded by Kanzelhoehe Observatory at the University of Graz. Scientists say the energy eruption of Sun can cause disturbances in Earth's magnetic field, thus affecting the engineering systems on Earth and space.

The Sun eruption, such as coronal mass ejection and draw energy from the strong magnetic fields in sunspots, according to a report quoted by Xinhua.

Astrid Veronig, head of Austrian Observatory argued that the current group of sunspots facing the Earth and in the southern part of the Sun has a diameter of 125,000 kilometers. The spots are very large so it can be seen without a telescope.

However, the agency stated, it is still only half of the total size of sunspots were recorded in October 2013, a period marked by the emergence of extreme glow that appears on the aurora can be seen from Austria though.

The scientists added another disturbance in the Earth's magnetic field through the turbulent space weather may still happen again in the next few weeks. Natural phenomena are also observed on the Sun eruptions US - National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the beginning of this year. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | XINHUA | SPACE.COM]
