The Human body transplantation technology is not just a dream

Dr. Harald Ott, a senior researcher of  MGH Department of Surgery and the Center for Regenerative Medicine said that the composite nature of human limbs make the functional development of biological substitutes to be very challenging.

"Limbs contains muscles, cartilage, blood vessels, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Each must be rebuilt and need special support structure called a matrix," says Harald.

"We have shown that we can maintain this matrix of all tissues in their natural relationship to one another, that we can create a culture of the entire construct over long periods of time, and we can restock the vascular system and muscles," he added.

Furthermore, he said that the muscles and blood vessels have grown in the laboratory from a stem cell. The blood vessels have even been transplanted into a patient, which is made from their own cells. Using the patient's own genetic material can actually reduce the risk of transplant rejection and eliminates the need for immune-suppressing drugs for life.
Dr. Harald explains the problems related to the growth of the whole body. The human body itself is far more complex and contain more than one type of single network.
