The color of Lettuce specify the speed of antioxidant effect

Lettuce, one type of vegetable in the Mediterranean diet, which has health benefits, primarily because it is rich in antioxidants, but not all varieties of plants that have the same antioxidant effect.

As reported by Sciencedaily, according to a study led by Usue Pérez-López of the Department of Plant Biology and Ecology of Faculty of Science of the the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in Spain, the color of the leaves of the plant determines the speed of compounds acting.

So, lettuce with green leaves have antioxidant that reacts more slowly while red leaf lettuce that has antioxidant effects faster. The results of the study have been published in the paper "phenolic composition and antioxidant properties associated in different colors lettuce: a study by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) Kinetics" which was recently published by the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Antioxidants are substances that counteract the long-term protection of the chain reaction of free radicals, or molecules that can damage cells and cause various diseases. Free radicals harm our bodies by way of aging, and the worst is serious diseases.

Lettuce is rich in antioxidants, because it contains compounds such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and vitamins A and C, and so forth. To conduct the study, which began in 2011, researchers from the UPV/EHU and the University of Pisa (Italy) analyze three varieties of lettuce: green leafy lettuce "Batavia", semi-red lettuce "Marvel of Four Seasons", and red leaf lettuce "Oak Leaf".

By using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) techniques, they were able to observe the kinetic behavior of the compounds each variety. And the result shows green leafy lettuce contains antioxidant compounds that dissolve in water, which acts on the slow and medium speed, red leaves have a medium and fast kinetic compound, whereas red lettuce leaf spring has three kinds of compounds with fast speed, medium and slow.

As highlighted by Dr. Pérez-López, "The fact that the compounds act at different speeds, does not mean lettuce particular color is better or worse than others. If we consume foods that can trigger free radical activity, there will be a compound that acts to eliminate they are faster.

However, at the same time is important for our bodies to get to the food intake of antioxidants which have slow kinetics that will be in action for longer. That is why people say it's better to mix lettuce with various colors for different characteristics and complementary.

After determining the kinetics of antioxidants, research is currently continuing with the goal of complete "nutraceutical" of the three varieties of lettuce. The research group is currently trying to improve the effect of specific compounds within each variety by exposing plants to short pressure. These compounds show function in plant defense.

So if the condition is not normally applied to plants (like watered with salt water or expose it to certain lighting intensity or high exposure to Carbon Dioxide), the defense will increase and as a result will increase the quality of plant antioxidants.

"What is important in this process is not lost productivity, and that is why we apply the stress intensity short. The level of excessive stress, plant growth can be disrupted, and we are not interested in achieving good quality but the risk is reducing the size of the plant. The goal is to maintain production and achieve good quality in this production, "said Dr. Usue Pérez-López. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | SCIENCEDAILY]

Male rodents persuasion partner with 'Love Songs'

"Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs. And what's wrong with that? I'd like to know." Thus Paul McCartney chanting in his 1976 song "Silly Love Songs." And it turns out love song was not confined to humans.

Male rodents also use the ultrasonic 'love song' to seduce the female partners, using a variety of tones when they smell the female rats and when they looked at their prospective partners, that's according to new research from Duke University.

"Communication between animals is more complicated than that known to us," said neurobiology professor Erich Jarvis. "Songs of mice containing a clear communication signals and not just a series of random vocalizations."

The scientists compared the singing mice with male bird song, although the ability to "sing" more restricted rats. The song of the rat is a series of words, or syllables, sometimes accompanied by tempo.

"This song is very high pitched, above 50 kilohertz, and can not be heard by humans. When we lower the tone recording and play at a high speed, it sounds like the song of a bird," said post-doctoral candidate Jonathan Duke Chabout.

Scientists have known for several decades that mice make sound - similar to a puppy who call its parent - and seeks to understand how they communicate.

The research team put male rats in the laboratory in a variety of situations, to record their song, and then analyze it. The song of male rats more complicated and loud when they can smell the urine mistreat women, but can not see the potential partners,

"As they say, 'I noticed, I am here, come here ..' and simpler singing male rats when female rats are nearby in order to save power to touch," said Jarvis. The research team played both types of songs to adult female rats, and found that they are more like simple songs than singing complicated.

"Are there certain syllables contained in it, we do not know," said Chabout. The study published in the Frontiers of Behavioral Neuroscience journal. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | DAILYMAIL]

A cute quadricycle from Bajaj

Bajaj, an Indian motorcycle manufacturer will produce a cute car. Yes cutie Bajaj RE60. Well, a recent report revealed that the Bajaj RE60 has claimed fuel consumption of about 40 km to 1 liter of petrol or CNG.

This cute car rely on a monocoque frame with the car weighs only 400 kg. This car can go thanks to the 4 valve DTS-i engine which has a capacity of 216 cc with liquid cooling system.

The engine is mated with a 5 speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, did not say how much power and torque generated by the Bajaj RE60 engine which is placed in the back. The power is channeled to the pair of rear wheels.

Bajaj claims when driven at low speed, Bajaj RE60 can go as far as 37 km for 1 liter of gasoline. The Government of India has categorize this Bajaj RE60 as a 'quadricycle' because these vehicles can not reach the speed of 90 kph.

Contact lenses with Zoom feature

American Association for the Advancement of Science's (AAAS) in California which was held on February 13 displays one of the quite phenomenal works, ie an eye contact lenses which supported with the zoom feature. These lenses were initially meant for soldiers as a form of bionic vision.
The contact lenses are 1.55-millimetres thick and feature a reflective telescope that’s only activated with a wink. (Picture from: http://bit.ly/1BVy7bA)
Actually, the contact lenses have been designed since 2013, but this time the lens has been upgraded. With the lens thickness of 1.55 mm, the telescopic lens is surrounded by an optical ring that can be activated only by winking and the lens then magnify the view of object up to 2.8 times.

When light enters the center of the lens, the small mirror which is located around it will reflect light, and then enlarge the view like looking through binoculars. As reported by Techly, eye contact lens that is predicted able to help many millions of people who have the vision problems that can only work if applied with a special smart glasses.

The users only simply wink their eyes to activate the lens. Right eye wink has a function to magnify the view and on the left eye's wink back to normal vision. Eric Tremblay of the École Polytechnique Fédérale lens de Lausanne in Switzerland is the contact lens creator said that the lens is very helpful people who have vision problems in the elderly.

He also added that until now the lens is still being researched and developed, but Eric and his team hope that eye contact lenses can be immediately used by those in need. So you can be sure that if they come to market, you’ll have the eyesight of a hawk. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | TECHLY]
