Ferrari’s 2021 Icona Mystery: A Retro Supercar with a Story to Tell

Velvet Thunder - When it comes to cars that make your jaw drop, heart race, and wallet weep all at the same time, Ferrari knows how to play the game like no other. And if you thought the Prancing Horse was done flexing its nostalgic muscles after the Monza SP1 and SP2, think again. As 2021 galloped toward its end, Ferrari was gearing up to unleash yet another masterpiece under its Icona Series—something so exclusive, it could make even Batman feel underdressed at a car meet.

Let’s rewind a little. Back in 2018, Ferrari introduced the world to its newly minted Icona Series, a lineup built to channel the soul of its legendary classics while packing the latest automotive tech that could practically rocket you to the moon (well, almost). The Monza SP1 and SP2 kicked things off with unapologetic flair, drawing design cues straight from the 1950s legends: the 750 Monza and 860 Monza. No roofs, no windshields, no problem. Just raw, retro roadsters that screamed “collector’s dream” louder than a V12 at full throttle.

Fast forward to 2021, and the buzz surrounding the next Icona entry was so loud, you’d think Enzo Ferrari himself was coming back for a sequel. Leaks, spy shots, and whispers in the wind all pointed to a stunning homage to the iconic Ferrari 330 P4. That’s right—the same beauty that nearly stole the show at the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, finishing second but winning eternal respect with its sculpted curves and fearless spirit.

As the year drew to a close, things started getting official. Ferrari sent out velvet-glove invitations to a select circle of VIP clients (because of course it did), inviting them to an ultra-private preview of the new Icona supercar on November 15, somewhere deep in Italy—most likely a secret lair that also doubles as a wine cellar and underground vault for priceless Ferraris. The rest of the world would get their first glimpse a week later, on November 21, when Ferrari would pull back the silk curtain and reveal what promises to be a retro-futuristic beast built to haunt your dreams.
There's a photo shared on Instagram shows one of the invitations being sent to one of the Ferrari Monza owners. In a nice touch, the presentation box includes a chrome-plated shifter. (Picture from: Modifikasi)
Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna confirmed the timeline, adding even more fuel to the fire. What’s more, CFO Antonio Picca Piccon gave us a peek behind the curtain, revealing that the car’s launch had actually been pulled forward from 2022 to 2021 due to, and we quote, “strong customer needs.” In plain English: rich people were really, really excited and Ferrari wasn’t about to make them wait.

Deposits, however, were still scheduled to start rolling in during 2022—because even when you fast-track a Ferrari, you still keep the money train running on a strict Italian schedule.

At this point, fans and collectors could do nothing but refresh their browsers, clutch their limited-edition Ferrari keychains, and wait. But one thing was certain: this wasn’t just another car. It was an invitation into an elite club where horsepower meets history, and style never goes out of season.
So while the rest of us were trying to remember where we parked at the mall, Ferrari was once again redefining what it means to be iconic—with a wink to the past, a roar into the future, and maybe just a little smirk that says, “Bet you wish you were on that guest list.” Curious? Let’s take a closer look at the car—RIGHT HERE! 😀 *** [EKA [15112021] | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | CARBUZZ | MOTORAUTHORITY ]
