From Obscurity to Spotlight: A Rare 1955 VW Samba Microbus

Vintage Resurrection - If you’ve ever been caught admiring the vintage charm of a Volkswagen van cruising down a sunny coastal road, you’re not alone. The VW Kombi, as it’s affectionately known in Indonesia, has long been a symbol of freedom, nostalgia, and a laid-back lifestyle. But beyond its pop culture status lies a true automotive gem — the 1955 Volkswagen Type 2 Samba Microbusa vehicle whose story goes far deeper than its iconic two-tone paint job.

Among the many versions of the Type 2 Transporter, the Samba Microbus holds a particularly special place. Originally introduced in the early 1950s, it was designed as a deluxe model for those seeking both style and function. What set the Samba apart was its signature panoramic windows, sunroof, and high-end trima bold move that transformed a humble cargo van into a fashionable people mover. But while the Samba captured hearts around the world, one specific model from 1955 stands out like no other.

This very Samba Microbus, the first of its kind ever to arrive in the United Kingdom, has a story that feels almost cinematic. Known by its license plate "SGP 62", the bus vanished from public view for decades, quietly tucked away in the English countryside. It wasn’t until 1992some thirty years laterthat the vehicle was rediscovered, hidden and waiting to be brought back to life. What followed was a meticulous 18-month restoration project, one that respected the bus’s original specifications while subtly upgrading its safety and comfort for modern standards.

Its journey from obscurity to spotlight is not just a tale of preservation, but one of passion. With original documentation intact and even a certificate of authenticity from the Volkswagen Stiftung Auto Museum, this Samba Microbus represents more than just another classic vehicle. It’s a tangible piece of Volkswagen’s legacy, lovingly restored to reflect the craftsmanship of its era.

Given its rarity — possibly the only surviving early Samba of its kind in the UK — it’s no surprise that it would draw serious attention among collectors. Experts at Silverstone Auctions anticipated a significant buzz around the sale, estimating it would fetch between £70,000 and £75,000 (approximately Rp. 1.3–1.4 billion) during their Race Retro Sale event at Stoneleigh Park back in 2015, Warwickshire. And rightly so. This isn’t just a van; it’s a rolling time capsule, a living memory of mid-century automotive innovation.

The Samba Microbus has always been more than metal and wheels. It’s an emblem of a bygone era — one that valued charm, simplicity, and the open road. Today, as enthusiasts around the world seek out these rare icons, this particular 1955 model stands as a reminder of how timeless design and a bit of history can create something truly priceless. *** [EKA [20052015] | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | CARSCOOPS ]

Researchers develop the smart Insulin to control Diabetes

The researchers have developed 'smart' insulin that automatically adjusts the amount of blood sugar in the body of people who suffer from Type 1 Diabetes. This will be a breakthrough for patients who are struggle to maintain healthy blood sugar levels everyday.

Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys the pancreatic cells that produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose metabolism of food, which used the body's cells for fuel.

People with Type 1 Diabetes must frequently check their glucose levels and inject insulin, sometimes several times a day. However, that's not appropriate routines. If Insulin is too little will raise blood sugar levels over time can lead to serious complications, including heart disease, kidney failure and blindness. But if patients with Type 1 Diebetes get too much insulin, they risk a dangerous coma.
Researchers are hopeful that 'smart' insulins which are undergoing trials could revolutionise the way diabetes is managed. (Picture from: http://bit.ly/1AqaNqO)
"The idea is to get something completely autonomous. So if the patient does not have to check their blood sugar levels. If they can inject insulin in the morning and know that they have enough supplies for the day, it is a best-case scenario. But I guess where the role of the smart insulin generation in response to glucose," said Matthew Webber, a biomedical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who helped develop the smart insulin that activate themselves when blood sugar levels rising.

Single injection of long-acting agent binding molecules of glucose circulating in the blood, automatically bring down blood sugar levels when they jumped. Webber said the researchers have conducted a several tests using laboratory pets. Tests showed that the smart insulin working for at least 14 hours, repetitive and automatic lowering blood sugar levels in rats.

The research is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. And the researchers hope the next step will conduct human clinical trials for the first glucose-response insulin. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | VOA NEWS]
