3. DeLorean DMC-12

This DeLorean DMC-12 which had become an icon of the Back to The Future trilogy in the mid-1980s, seems to be included in the line of poorly designed sports cars. How could it not be, the design is considered very boring, and weird with a box-shaped headlamp model that is actually similar to old school cars and doesn't fit the idea of depicting a futuristic car. What? Doesn't that fit the title of the movie?

Not only that, the DeLorean Motors Company as the manufacturer of the car does not paint and maintains the distinctive gray color of stainless steel which is the raw material for car bodies. However, even though it is labeled as a poorly designed car, in fact the DeLorean DMC-12 has succeeded in becoming a legend in the Hollywood movies history and is much sought after by collectors.

Even today, the automaker company in collaboration with ItalDesign, an Italian well-known automotive design house has been launched its modern, electric-powered version, named the DeLorean Alpha 5.

2. Mosler Raptor

The list of badly designed sports cars is then filled by the Mosler Raptor, which was first introduced to the public by the Riviera Beach, Florida-based supercar manufacturer Mosler Automotive back in 1997. The automaker even claims that the Raptor has more appealing body due to it's inspired by a sexy woman. Is that right?

Well, in fact, if you look at the design, which is so stiff and strange, especially on the windshield design in the form of two halves installed at an acute angle, it's hard to say that it's sexy, especially when compared to sexy women (in our opinion, this car looks more like a submarine than a car). However this weird looking car armed with a then slightly modified fresh LS1 engine with an aluminum block, and made it capable to burst out 446 hp of power and 582 Nm of torque.

So with full confidence the American manufacturer brought this strange car to race in the 24 Hours of Daytona 1998. As a result, the car has stopped early due to technical problems after 169 laps, and the engineers who designed the Mosler Raptor also reaped scorn from automotive enthusiasts. According to official sources say that only two of these cars were produced in addition to three more 'civillized' versions.

1. Bricklin SV1

On the top list of badly designed sports cars is the Bricklin SV1. As you can see in the cover image above, the standard version of the car produced from 1974 to early 1976 by General Vehicles, an automotive company founded by Malcolm Bricklin. The name SV-1 stood for Safety Vehicle - One, and as both a business and a sports car it was a failure. This isn't because Malcolm Bricklin was staunchly anti-smoking so that he didn't want included a lighter or an ashtray in this car.

That's hilarious, because these cars not only couldn't move, but had a tendency to completely melt down. The reason being, they are real dent-resistant plastic (think hardened toys) powered by a V8 engines inside. Reportedly in a test conducted by Car & Driver magazine in May 1975, the Bricklin's performance was found to be comparable to that of the contemporary Corvette.

Unfortunately, the design of the Bricklin SV1 is less selling, less unsightly as well. In addition, the security features are considered not working optimally. All of that is summed up into one to be the reasons why this car failed in the market.
