The Porsche 928 Reimagined by Strosek: A Controversial Classic of Its Era

The Porsche 928 itself occupies a curious niche in the brand’s history. Introduced in 1977 and crowned Car of the Year in 1978, the 928 was designed to combine grand touring comfort with sports car performance. Yet despite its acclaim, it never achieved the household recognition of the 911.

Enter Strosek Auto Design, the German coachbuilder famed for its daring reinterpretations of Porsche classics. While they have touched models like the 911 and even the controversial Lamborghini Diablo VT/R, the 928 remains one of their more intriguing, and rarer, projects.

Strosek’s program for the Porsche 928 included a range of cosmetic upgrades such as spoilers and bumpers, organized into three stages: Version I, II, and III. The specific car pictured here is believed to be the only Porsche 928S Version I with this exact configuration, notably missing the large rear spoiler found on later versions.

Visually, the Strosek 928 commands attention. A bold blue paint job sets the tone, accentuating the widened wheel arches, reshaped doors with triple locks, and the overall aggressive stance. Completing the look are period-appropriate BBS wheels that enhance both aesthetics and road presence. The exterior, while polarizing to some purists, undeniably transforms the 928 into a statement piece—an unmistakable Strosek creation.

Under the hood, the Porsche 928 retains its robust V8 engine, delivering around 240 brake horsepower in standard form. Whether Strosek enhanced the engine’s performance remains uncertain, but the car’s muscular appearance alone conveys an impression of speed and power. Inside, the cabin combines craftsmanship with flair: brown leather envelops the dashboard, seats, door panels, and pillars, while checkered patterns add visual intrigue to the center sections of seats and panels. It’s a cabin that blends comfort with a sense of performance-oriented design, characteristic of both Porsche and Strosek.

The Porsche Strosek 928 is a polarizing figure in automotive circles.
