Why do Kangaroo Jump?

One of the unique animals of Australia, kangaroo, besides known as animals are adorable, as well as its ability to jump while on the move. Some researchers, as quoted by Science Daily, trying to uncover why this land mammals have this capability.

According to the researchers, kangaroos form an important position in the tree of life, but until now they have not been sequenced DNA. An international consortium of researchers were trying to sort the kangaroo gene, including the species of tammar wallabies, and find data that may be hidden in the genes responsible for characteristics of the kangaroo jumps.

"Project identification tammar wallaby genes have given us many possibilities to understand how different types of kangaroos other marsupials," says Professor Marilyn Renfree of the University of Melbourne.

Tammar wallabies have many interesting biological characteristics. For example, gestational age of 12 months covering the period of 11 months of suspended animation in the womb. At birth, the young kangaroo weighs only half a gram, and spent nine months in the mother's pouch, where newborns are for protection. The researchers hope that the gene sequence will offer clues about how genes regulate the lives of tammar wallabies kangaroos.

They also identified, a specific gene that makes a kangaroo jump and perform other behaviors that do not do mammals generally. The conclusion to be obtained while the scientists emphasized that the genes of species of tammar wallabies, which became the main factor why the kangaroo, which is also Australia's iconic animals jump. *** [JAM | PIKIRAN RAKYAT 13102011]
