Molecular machine as the carrier of new hope for humanity

It is appropriate if the Nobel Prize 2016 in Chemistry was awarded to three scientists who laid the foundation for creating the world's smallest machine, a machine that sized thousands of times thinner than a human hair. And from those smallest machines now allow Germany to make anti-cancer compounds combretastatin A-4 that claimed can cure cancer without harming healthy cells.

They are Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Sir J. Fraser Stoddart, and Bernard L. Feringa who have acted to trigger the manufacturing of molecular level machines. Sauvage, 71, is professor emeritus at the University of Strasbourg and director of research emeritus at France’s National Center for Scientific Research.  Stoddart, 74, a Scottish-born professor at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, who became a U.S. citizen in 2011. Feringa, 65, is a professor of organic chemistry at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.

Actually, these nanoscale machine actually been envisioned since the 1950s. And according to Richard Feynman, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, said that such a machine will bring a bright future. The machines are realized through elaborate research stage, take at least 30 years to actually can be applied.

Sauvage who started with a valuable innovation in 1983. In that time, he made two molecular rings that can be manipulated easily. Then he modified the rings so they can encircle each other.

Then, in 1991, Stoddart invented the molecular wheels. The wheels can rotate with a certain axis, and powered by collisions of molecules in the vicinity. Moreover, these wheels were able to keep the information.

Followed by Feringa then successfully made molecular motors in 1999. These innovation to enhance the two previous scientists innovations to realizing the molecular machines.

Of the aforementioned innovations, which then allows for the creation of a kind of nanocar that can move on the microscopic tracks by carrying certain cargo.

According to Sara Snogerup Linse, a member of the Nobel committee who said that the creation of the smallest engine in the world is full of challenges. The scientists should be able to create the molecules with the bonds that easily manipulated.

"Another challenge is the molecule that has a tendency to reach equilibrium. Thus, it is very difficult to create a movement of molecules in a certain direction," she said as quoted by the Washington Post on Wednesday, October 5, 2016.

The discovery of these molecular motors was same as revolutionary with the invention of the electric motor in 1830, which then triggers a variety of innovations, such as trains, planes up to washing machines.

Feringa said that he was surprised be one of the three receivers of Nobel Prize in Chemistry. "I feel like the Wright Brothers who flew for the first time 100 years ago. People say, why do we need a plane? Now we are in the Boeing 747 and Airbus," he said.

Feringa also revealed that the smallest engine in the world opens many possible applications. At the same time, it must be ensured that these innovations were treated well, and aiming for humanity. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | WASHINGTON POST]

The boss of Jaguar Land Rover, Dr. Ralf Speth, said it has conducted a series of road tests on a prototype model Defender. Although, the current model is still being developed.

As quoted from Autocar on Monday, October 3, 2016, Speth reveal the launch will be made in 2018. Although quite fast, Land Rover take advantage of some of the development of models of products. As the vehicle architecture will use aluminum as applied to the latest model of the Land Rover Discovery.

"The new Defender will be an icon, and we're working on an authentic replacement of the old Defender. The architecture will contain many different elements from other aluminum models," he explained.

Speth also confirmed that the development will be done using a low cost, the goal for Defender affordable price. However, this generation will offer offroad vehicle class as its predecessor.

As a reminder before, a billionaire and Land Rover Defender lover, who was also the last edition Defender buyers, Jim Ratcliffe was dissatisfied. He asked the British car manufacturer to reproduce the Land Rover Defender.

In fact, Ratcliffe said to have held talks with senior executives at Jaguar Land Rover. Although it is unclear whether the British billionaire wants to buy the intellectual property rights of the Defender, production lines, or both. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | AUTOCAR]

Not only has more aggressive design and also seem more slender, but the embedded technology in it also experienced a leap that so far compared to the previous versions. By using 5-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to read all motorcycle movements, so it can be pinned latest technology such as slide control, lift control, even cornering ABS. Then there is the Quick shifter up and down which is a standard feature on this motorcycle.

To support the tag line 'total control,' the motorcycle is equipped with a sophisticated suspension system ie Öhlins S-EC at front and rear, and used the NIX30 upside down fork at front and rear with the TTX36 shock absorber. The Suspension Control Unit (SCU) can read the roll rate, yaw rate and the slope of the motorcycle through a sophisticated device of 40g 5-axis (3-axis acceleration and 2-axis angular velocity) Bosch MM5.10 IMU gyro.

Interestingly behind the dashboard, there're full digital panel indicator that looks similar to the Yamaha YZF-R1M speedometer. On its display screen, there're three riding modes, ie Street, Circuit and Mechanic, and the suspension setting mode can be setup here as well.
The engine configuration used remains 4-cylinder inline, and bore x stroke still the same, ie 76x55,1 mm, but has used the throttle by wire, so now there are three ride modes. After done a variety of engine internal changes, including raising the compression ratio be 13:1, so that the power jumped 11 hp to 189 hp @ 12,500 rpm.

The bike's frame is made of die-cast aluminum twin-spar, though looks big it turns 14 kg lighter than the previous version, now only 197 kg. Then the die-cast aluminum subframe is also very light, weighs less than 800 grams. In order to support agility, then its wheelbase being set only 1,404 mm and the seat height is 831 mm.

If you are still not satisfied with the spec above? These Japanese renowned motorcycle manufacturer also has provided another version ie the CBR1000RR Fireblade SP2, which uses Marchesini lighter weight rims and made of carbon fiber body.
Not only that, its performance is also more powerful, thanks to changes in the cylinder head, with larger valves, special camps and maximum cooling. Even, there were a sport and race kits from HRC for those who will use this bike in the race arenas.
