Advantages and Disadvantages of Hybrid Cars

Hybrid cars are considered as the car of the future. It can effectively conserve fuel and at the same time, it only produces low CO2 emission. Now many people are considering getting rid of their conventional cars and purchase a hybrid car to help cut the cost of fuel consumption.

Hybrid cars have recently become increasingly popular, especially since the price of conventional fuels which increases with time, and the issue of the impact of climate change is also increasingly serious. The basic definition of a hybrid car is a car that uses two or more distinct power sources to run the vehicle, usually a combination of an internal combustion engine with one or more electric motors. The combination allows a hybrid car has high fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions than conventional fuel cars.

There are two main advantages of hybrid cars compared to conventional cars,
  • The first is lower CO2 emissions, and therefore reduce the impact on global warming (environmental advantages of hybrid cars),
  • And the other is the fuel efficiency is higher, which can save many expenses for fuel (economic benefits of hybrid cars). In an age when the price of fuel is quite low, the use of fossil fuels is not something that is feared by many people, but in the uncertain economic times, almost everyone would think fuel efficiency.
These two advantages above is important, so that make hybrid cars could be a better option than conventional cars.

By looking to the USA, currently there is a strong effort in the country to increase car mileage. From the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards (CAFE) it can be seen that the current standard requires an average mileage of all new cars sold by the automaker under 27.5 mpg (8.55 liters per 100 km). This standard is also intended to increase the production of hybrid cars in the United States as more and more hybrid cars are sold by the automaker, the more expensive luxury cars that can be sold very well. For example, if a car manufacturer can sell a hybrid car that uses 3.92 liters per 100 km, they can sell four expensive luxury cars that use 11.76 liters per 100 km.

The biggest drawback of the hybrid car is the price is still quite expensive, this may be due to the hybrid cars production is still a relatively high cost. The high cost of hybrid cars is usually due to using a material which is very rare in their production (eg dysprosium used for making advanced electric motors and battery systems in hybrid propulsion system, as well as neodymium is used as an important material in the magnet electric motors).

Another drawback of hybrid cars this car has a heavier weight than non-hybrid cars, so its handling is not in the same range as for similar conventional car. The fact that hybrid cars are usually heavier than the non-hybrid is due to the installation of heavy batteries in hybrid cars.

Another major drawback that there is a problem in the hybrid car service. Quite difficult to find a repair shop that has the tools needed to download servicing hybrid cars so that in many cases users are forced to serve in the manufacturer, which in many cases can be very expensive.

It is usually designated by many as a weakness of the hybrid car is about speed. For some people, speed is the main reason for buying cars and hybrid cars tend to run at a slower pace when compared with conventionally fueled cars.

Another problem relating to hybrid car is very risky in accidents. What makes a hybrid car work effectively and it also makes it risky if it ever involved in an accident. This is because hybrid cars stores electricity voltage in the battery. This means that a large possibility of electric shock when you are involved in an accident. It also means that it is relatively difficult for the rescue of the driver and passengers of hybrid cars because of the dangers of high voltage in the car.

Although there is no doubt that in the current hybrid cars continue to gain in popularity, there are still some factors that hinder this type of car can fully compete with the cars conventional fuel. The process of manufacturing hybrid cars are still relatively high cost so that the final product usually has a high price as well, and this weakness may deter many prospective buyers in making purchasing decisions.

When the cost of production has been comparable to a conventional car, we can expect there will be mass production of hybrid cars because of environmental and economic advantages they have over conventional cars. Exactly when this will happen is difficult to say, but because of the increasingly popular hybrid car, there will be a more serious study and more oriented to improve their efficiency, so we should not really expect some good news from the hybrid car market in the coming years. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES]
