Jakarta hit by severe floods expected in 2025. Flooding occurred from the north coast of Jakarta and gone deep into the region of the National Monument in Central Jakarta.

According to the National Committee World Delta Summit 2011 Chairman, Jan Sipaheluwakan, the most severe scenario floods that hit Jakarta was prepared by experts from various institutions. Flood threat posed by the three factors that occur simultaneously in that year.
  • First, the occurrence of large tidal cycles occur every 18 years. In Jakarta, the cycle was last occurred in 2007. At that time, causing tidal water that should flow from the south to the coastal area held by the impulse pairs from the north.
  • Second, tthe decline in soil surface Jakarta, due to the exploitation of large-scale ground water by residents and industry. In some places, the decline could reach more than 40 centimeters in areas such as Cengkareng, Pluit, and Kelapa Gading. Simultaneously, which decreased the surface area of land is often flooded.
  • Third, climate change is causing sea level rise of up to several centimeters. This factor was happening and continued to increase gradually. It is estimated that by 2025 sea level rise will reach a critical stage.
"These three factors are mutually reinforcing threat of massive flooding in 2025," Jan said to reporters after the opening of World Delta Summit 2011 in Jakarta, 21 November 2011.

Researchers compiled a list of risky delta experienced environmental disasters caused by tide, overflow of river water, until the water crisis. Jakarta included in the ranking sixth after Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Taipei, and Bangkok.

The first four cities already have a delta of good management, so the level of vulnerability can be controlled through engineering and technology beleid. In contrast to Bangkok and Jakarta. Evidently, Bangkok suffered major flooding last October and is expected not subside until early 2012.

According to Jan, it's time the Jakarta government made flood defense strategy before this scenario actually occurs. If not done immediately, could have such a big flood that occurred in Bangkok also hit Jakarta. *** [ANTON WILLIAM | KORAN TEMPO 3714]
