The Flu Reliever Ice Cream

The future of health food,
hopefully. (Picture  from:

Are you feeling the effects of the flu? While some might turn to the traditional chicken soup and saltines for relief, maybe a little ice cream would help.

This fun flu remedy was made by Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, New York. The company is currently developing a new flavor of ice cream called "Influenza Sorbet" and claimed the ice cream was safe because it is contains cayenne pepper (known to relieve sore throat, rheumatism and arthritis), ginger, Maker's Mark bourbon, honey, and orange and lemon juices.

In addition to the ingredients mentioned, Bauer explained that the product also contains pectin (carbohydrate derived from apple cider vinegar), known to coat the throat. Honey is meant to lubricate the throat and the cayenne, as you can imagine, reportedly helps clear nasal passages. She believes the sorbet reduces the pain for sore throat sufferers and enables sleep.

The owner and founder of the ice cream company, Jeni Britton Bauer said that the customers can choose the flavor of ice cream that can cure sore throat and clear the annoying snot. And Jeni wrote in the description that it's "modeled on the home remedy my mother and grandmother made when anyone in the family was under the weather ... a mug of hot whiskey with honey and lemon juice, then straight to bed." If you're wondering how it tastes, Bauer says it's like a "whiskey sour plus ginger."

As reported from Delish, the ice cream can be served as dessert is priced at around $12 (or approx Rp. 117,000) per pint. "People who buy our ice cream tell me that they feel better, probably because the secret ingredients such as a small doses of pectin which was usually found in cough medicine, that was also found on the ice cream," said Bauer.

"It's a fun way to repel the flu, probably because the spices content are good for health,," said Doris Bucher who helped develop the flu vaccine with a team of scientists from the New York Medical College. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | GRUB STREET NEW YORK | DELISH | RIF | PIKIRAN RAKYAT 11042013]
