First in the World, Night Orchid Blooms

Nocturnal orchid, which blooms only when dark night fell, found on a tropical island in the South Pacific. Behavior of orchid species that are not usually it is a new thing in the world of orchids.

New species of flowers that bloom at night, Bulbophyllum nocturnum, has been completed is described by scientists from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in England, and the Center for Biodiversity Naturalis in the Netherlands. Dutch researcher, Ed de Vogel, a mysterious plant specimens collected from a logging site when doing field work in New Britain, a large volcanic island in Papua New Guinea.

But the habits of orchids that bloom at night is not known until recently. De Vogel and colleagues replant the plant on arrival in the Netherlands, and orchids thrive in a greenhouse. When one plants bud release, the scientist's time of waiting rare and unusual orchids of the genus Bulbophyllum it blooms.

They were disappointed when the next day was dry and withered petals without bloom. Finally, De Vogel brought the plant home. Two hours before midnight, a flower begin to bloom, 'raises the interest of scientists who have never seen before. Observations further revealed that another flower blooms come at 10 pm and the next day, about 12 hours after the bloom, the flowers wilt.
