A brand new Italian flying saucer

Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, a renowned Italian coachbuilder company managed to build the latest high performance 2-door roofless supercar which takes the base of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione Spyder supercar.

And then emerged a supercar named '2016 Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spyder,' that said as continuation version of Alfa Romeo Disco Volante were also created by the Milan-based coachbuilder in 2012.

The Disco Volante and the Disco Volante Spyder is not the first design results from the Milan-based coachbuilder. And the Disco Volante name itself actually is the designation for the Alfa Romeo 1900 C52, the car made in 1952-1953.

Disco Volante in English means Flying Saucer. This name arose because its shape resembles a flying saucer design imagination. For information, the 1950s was an era when people were dreaming can be walked on the moon and outer space.

To realize the Disco Volante Spyder, then they dismantle the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione until leaving the frame, engine, and transmission only. In addition, all parts of the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante redesigned by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera.

the Milan-based coachbuilder put a high respect for the Italian touches and named this car as Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spyder as a tribute to those Italian tradition.
Instead of just using the fabric roof from the Alfa Romeo 8C Spider, the Disco Volante Spyder has two lightweight carbon fiber roof panels that weigh about eight pounds each and can be manually stowed in the trunk. (Picture from: http://adf.ly/1gxfnD)
"We want the driver as if he were driving a car that is completely roofless," said Louis de Fabribeckers, head of design of Touring Superleggera. Then they created a low windshield with a very thin frame almost invisible. The front glass is made like connected with the side glass.

"In bottom line, the big idea of this car is we wanted to create a dynamic, strong car, but not look too aggressive," he continued.

Just like its ancestor, the 2016 Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spyder is also built with a number of innovative technologies. The design process all the components of this car have passed the safety homologation, aerodynamics, structural analysis, along with the Alfa Romeo engineers using computerized devices and the most sophisticated simulations.

For example, the tightness level of the car cabin become one of the important things in the roofless supercar. With the help of Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) technology, Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spyder able to be spurred at speeds of 180 kph with the open roof, but only produced the noise levels of 24-50 dB only. The technology is also successfully to deliver the air to the rear of car, while providing optimal downforce.

Because the donor car had been wore the steel space-frame that lightweight and sturdy, as well as a number of other structural elements ensured the dynamic factor while driving with Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spyder still maintained.

Several other components such as the front bumper, grille, hood, trunk lid, windscreen frame, until the removable targa roof are all made of carbon fiber materials.
This supercar carrying a Maserati V8 engine with a capacity of 4.7 liter in the front of the car. These machine is capable of producing the power up to 444 hp and combined with automatic transmission is placed at the rear to drive its two rear wheels.

As the result, the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spyder accelerates from rest to 100 kph in 4.5 seconds and continue sped up to a maximum speed of 291 kph. This car is produced only 7 units worldwide. And as usual, all have been sold out. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | ROAD&TRACK]
