Rare Mazda RX-7 Le Mans Racer Found After 35 Years

Legacy Resurrected - Mazda’s commitment to motorsport has always been a fascinating chapter in automotive history, blending innovation with a relentless pursuit of excellence. Among its most unique contributions is the Mazda 254i, a race car based on the RX-7 that has long been shrouded in mystery. Once forgotten, this exceptional vehicle has now reemerged, captivating enthusiasts with its story and craftsmanship.

As quoted by TheJapaneseNostalgicCar, the Mazda 254i debuted at the 1982 24 Hours of Le Mans, marking the peak of Mazda's Group 5 endurance racing efforts. Two cars were entered in the race, reflecting years of development and lessons learned on the global motorsport stage.

The No. 82 car reached a significant milestone for Mazda, finishing 14th overall and overcoming the extreme challenges of Le Mans. Meanwhile, the No. 83 car showed strong performance, reaching as high as 8th place before retiring mid-race due to mechanical issues.

This marked the end of an era. That same year, the FIA introduced Group C, a new class of prototype racers, which shifted the focus of endurance racing. Mazda adapted quickly, introducing the 717C in 1983, and eventually achieved iconic status with the Le Mans-winning 787B in 1991. As attention turned to these prototypes, the 254i faded into obscurity, its significance overshadowed by the evolving world of motorsport.

Years later, one of the two 254i cars resurfaced in Japan, reigniting interest in this rare machine. Found in Okayama, a relatively remote prefecture, the car was confirmed as the No. 83 vehicle by Tachimoto-san, a former chief mechanic at Mazdaspeed. His expert analysis of its brake system and rear suspension, combined with historical records, authenticated the car’s origins. Despite its decades-long disappearance, the vehicle remained remarkably intact, making it the sole surviving example of Mazda’s Group 5 racers.

Following its rediscovery, the 254i underwent a painstaking restoration process. Powercraft, a renowned specialty shop in Gotemba, restored the car’s composite bodywork, ensuring every detail reflected its original form. Isami Amemiya, the celebrated figure behind RE Amemiya, took on the task of rebuilding its iconic 13B rotary engine. The car’s specifications highlight its engineering prowess, with the dual-rotor engine producing 300 PS and the vehicle’s lightweight design ensuring unparalleled performance for its time.

Further inspection revealed fascinating details about the car’s history. Underneath layers of paint, remnants of its JSPC racing days were uncovered, linking it to the striking black-and-gold Jun livery and its subsequent pink appearance in Japanese endurance races. These findings offered a deeper understanding of the car’s journey and cemented its place in Mazda’s storied motorsport history.

Among these dazzling innovations, the General Motors Corporation (GM) stood out at the New York World's Fair in 1964-65, showcasing a concept car that captivated visitors with its forward-thinking design and technology. In our sighting, its shape is reminiscent of the 1959 LeMans Coupe by Strother MacMinn and John Bond.

One of the most striking aspects of the GM-X Stiletto was its doorless design. The absence of side doors meant there were no front roof pillars, providing an unobstructed forward view. While this design choice made entering and exiting the vehicle somewhat challenging, it added to the car's sleek, futuristic appeal. Inside, the Stiletto was a technological marvel. It boasted a climate control system that automatically maintained the desired cabin temperature, ultrasonic sensors for obstacle detection, and a rear-view camera that displayed its feed on a central screen. Instead of a traditional steering wheel, the GM-X Stiletto featured a compact aircraft-style control that turned only halfway from lock to lock. The car's wheels were maneuvered by electric motors rather than a mechanical linkage, allowing for variable steering ratios. This meant that in a parking lot, a slight turn of the steering wheel could result in a large wheel angle, while at higher speeds, the steering became more stable and precise.

The Stiletto also introduced an innovative maintenance warning system, which used a female voice to alert the driver about upcoming oil changes and refueling needs. For communication, the car was equipped with microphones and speakers, a necessary addition since it lacked roll-down windows.

Glenfrome Delta: The 1970s Sports Car That Never Hit the Road

Lost In Time - In the world of automotive design, many prototypes are created with great ambition, only to remain hidden from the broader public. One such intriguing example is the Glenfrome Delta, a two-seater sports car developed by Glenfrome Engineering in the 1970s. Despite its unique design and promising features, the Delta never advanced beyond the concept stage, but it still left a mark as a rare glimpse of innovation and craftsmanship.

The Glenfrome Delta was the result of a 20-month development process. Its creators, working with limited resources but a clear vision, designed the car around a simple steel chassis. What set the Delta apart was its hand-formed aluminium bodywork, shaped meticulously over a temporary light steel tube frame. The engine was a rear mid-mounted 1998cc 16-valve, single overhead cam (SOHC) four-cylinder unit, sourced from the Triumph Dolomite Sprint. To complement this, the car was fitted with a 4-speed manual transmission taken from a Saab Turbo, providing it with a capable, if not outstanding, powertrain.

When the car made its debut at the 1977 Earls Court Motor Show, its sleek design caught the eye of many. The Delta's aesthetic was reminiscent of the futuristic and striking concepts of the time, notably the Porsche Tapiro, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. With smooth lines, curved panels, and an overall sleek profile, the Delta looked every bit like a car designed to turn heads. But despite its appearance, it struggled to move beyond its prototype status. Plans to improve the car’s performance with a turbocharged Rover V8 engine and a 5-speed ZF transaxle never materialized.

What stood out most about the Delta was the passion that went into its creation. The bodywork, made entirely of hand-shaped aluminium, was a work of craftsmanship. The process itself was unconventional. There were no technical drawings or design sketches; instead, the builders, father and sons Ken & Michael Evans and Vivian Hunt, laid out the car’s mechanical components on the workshop floor and used chalk lines to guide the frame's construction. The steel chassis was welded together to hold the components in place, while the aluminium panels were bent and rolled to fit over the light tube frame. Once the panels were shaped, the frame was removed, leaving behind a smooth, freehand-formed body.

The prototype’s mechanical underpinnings were practical, if somewhat unrefined. It used 13-inch wheels, which made the car feel undergeared. The suspension components were sourced from other vehicles, with the front suspension coming from a Triumph GT6 and the rear using a semi-trailing arm setup from a Triumph Stag. This mix of parts gave the Delta a firm and sporty ride, although it wasn’t without its rough edges. The car’s handling, while responsive, reflected its prototype nature, with some bumps and imperfections in the driving experience.

Though the Delta had potential, especially with the planned improvements, it never went into production. The prototype was stored away for several years, and the idea of the Delta faded into the background. Despite this, the car remained a symbol of what could have been, a glimpse of a high-performance sports car built with passion and ingenuity.
