The Rise and Fall of Operating System

Ten years ago , if we are carrying a Nokia Communicator (especially the E 90 series in maroon color) that is one mark of pinnacle of our social status. By adopting the Symbian OS, and in the middle of a cell phone position is still a luxury things, make the Nokia Communicator position was impregnable.
Then, exactly started last September, 2013, who would have thought if the mighty Symbian OS is finally dead, just take a look at the Nokia 808 PureView, which is released first on February 27, 2012 and adopt Symbian OS was recorded its last series and sent on last September, 2013.

Who would have thought this glory so soon be gone? First introduced in 1998 and is mainly used by Nokia as well as a small portion Samsung, LG, and Sony Ericsson, the first OS which is initiated by Psion (a London-based software house) started sticking in the 2000s.

Precisely in 2002 the people were hunting the four of Nokia Communicator series, i.e. Nokia 9210, 9300, 9300i, and 9500, which used the Symbian Series 80 operating system. At that time a person will feel cool and proud when carrying this cell phone.

When in 2006 Nokia is released Symbian Series 60 and Symbian i on 2008, the attention on the Nokia's OS is still there. Evidently, as reported by Gartner, a global telecommunications research institute, that Symbian's market share in 2006 had reached 73% of the shipping of 100 million smart phone in the world.

In that time, other operating systems began to steal the show, like the BlackBerry and iPhone in 2008, the position of Symbian was still not deterred. And the peak was in July, 2009, about 250 million units of smart phones based on Symbian OS successfully sent all over the world," wrote by Gartner on September 25, 2011.

Dark clouds began to be felt at the end of 2009 when their market share dropped to 47.2%. Then in early 2010 the curve had a sharp decline to 37.6%, while at the same time the competitor continues to burst embrace the market.

At that time, Android approaching with share of 22.7%, Apple 15.7%, and RIM's 16%. In fact, two of the first names above officially plunged into the smart phone industry in 2008, while RIM began intensive offering the BlackBerry on 2004.

"Finally, in the second quarter of 2012, Nokia's Symbian OS that was ever so popular, must to face with the lowest market share of its existence, that is 4.4%," said Ramon Llamas, a senior researcher on IDC - a global telecommunications research firm in cnn.com, on August 9, 2012.

Not much different fate also experienced by Palm which also known as GarnetOS. Are you remembered in 2006, amid in the booming of Nokia Communicator, a PDA (Personal Digital Assistants) that used the Palm OS as its flagship, is able to draw a little attention.

Palm M505 series which uses Palm OS 4.0 most enthused in the professional circles, although its shape and electric pen was relatively large and troublesome. It had developed five serial versions and one Cobalt version, Palm finally dead. On February 11, 2009 , Palm's CEO Ed Colligan said, they will not put out another Palm -based on their gadgets product.

The number one vendor of the smart phone in the world today, Samsung also must be willing to lose their homemade system, Bada. First introduced in February, 2010 through Wave 88500 series, when it was sticking up when the prominent developers such as Electronic Arts, Twitter, etc. is came to support it. In fact, Wave 88500 was then immediately sold one million units in one month post-release.

The sales of Wave series (as a differentiator with Android series, named Samsung Galaxy) could even reach 4.5 million units in the second quarter of 2011. However, then on 2012 Bada experiencing the grim days when the sale would not go up and crippled compared with the Galaxy series.

In the end, by February 25, 2013, Hong Won-Pyo, President of Samsung's Media Solutions Center, diplomatically stating that the Bada closure plan to put together with a Linux-based Tizen operating system to better satisfy users.

In the world of computers, the operating system was not entirely user likes. There are some that still exist but in crummy conditions. Just as BeOS that has been developed since 1991 by the American computer company, Be Inc.

Actually the system is a digital media whiz but nevertheless known to the world community, especially after they involved in a patent dispute with Microsoft on 2002. While other operating systems drowned, rapid progress is now being achieved by Android and iPhone.

Android now has share of 80% of the smart phone world with a variety of vendors, while the iPhone stalking behind despite having only one vendor. The question is, are you sure they will continue to endure as a champion? I don't think so. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | RUDI RIONO | PIKIRAN RAKYAT 21112013]

Application to distinguish between Humans and Machines

When we create a new account, either to become a member in a website, e-Mail, or a comment form on a website, at the end of the filling form 'll often see multiple digit numbers listed in the image, or fill out a simple addition and subtraction results like 9+1=?, 7-4=? or a series of letters in the image, etc. That is called a CAPTCHA.

CAPTCHA exampe.
CAPTCHA stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test tell Computer and Human Apart". CAPTCHA popularized since many weblogs on the internet. Weblogs generally provides the facility of interaction between bloggers (creator of the blog) and visitors by filling a comment form. Because the popularity of weblogs, comments media is often used to increase the popularity of the new websites.

It was not a problem initially, but later the weblogs began to the comment floods that have nothing to do with the article that was written, also the ads that come continuously without stopping, this strange behavior is the act of the robot spam, an automated program that made to send messages/ads continuously to make a comment on a website that has a high ranking on the internet. The spam comment is annoying. We needs to find a solution that could restrict robots to not continue this brutal act. For that purpose the CAPTCHA was created.

Numbers or letters that are printed in an image file for a computer is pixel color code, so as to decompose it takes a very long time, not to mention when mixed with background made snaking impede writing, so it was virtually impossible for computer to guess what the characters shown in the image. While humans can easily see and immediately wrote the character listed, or perform process calculations such as addition or subtraction. Through this test may ultimately distinguish between human and machine. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | SEPTI | PIKIRAN RAKYAT 21112013]

Windows Blue Hit M1

Not even one year Windows 8 is released, Microsoft is now preparing the latest version of it called Windows Blue. This is the first update of Windows 8 in full by the Bill Gates company. Microsoft is working towards a public preview version of Windows Blue.

Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have revealed that the software giant is aggressively targeting a summer launch date for Windows Blue, ensuring its development cycle is short. Microsoft recently passed Milestone 1 (M1) for Windows Blue, but the company is now readying a Milestone Preview which will form the basis for a public preview. The second stage is called Milestone 2. While the final version will be launched in June 2013.

According to leaked acquired from ZDNet technology site to one of the screen shot leakers, the WZor team (via Winaero.com), there's a rumor that Windows Blue is based on Windows 6.3. I'm hearing from one of my sources that this information is correct. It's version 6.3 for the same reason Windows 7 was version 6.1: It's the version number reported to apps when they query the new platform so that apps know they are running on a new Windows release.

Windows Blue is believed to be the first of a number of annual operating system updates to Windows 8. There also is a Windows Phone Blue in the works that is expected to have the same core code as Windows Blue. (But, just like the Windows Phone 8 operating system, which was version 8.0, the Windows Phone Blue core build number will likely be something different from Windows 6.3.)

Blue is expected to be made available to existing Windows 8 users by the end of the summer, with support for new 7- and 8-inch devices and Internet Explorer 11 built-in. Microsoft is also preparing a Blue update to its Windows Phone operating system and other services as a project to further integrate all of its software offerings.

Traditionally, Microsoft is updating its operating system every three years. Some of the company's engineers to post their status on Linkedln accounts that they are working on the Windows operating system 9. Towards the end of last year, Microsoft launched its Windows 8 operating system, which replaces Windows 7. Windows 8 is the latest version that had a major refurbishment, such as touch screen technology and using box shaped icon. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | ZDNET | BUDI | KORAN TEMPO 4154]
