Chitosan Keep Bananas Fresh

Preserve food safely, especially bananas can now be done by spraying chitosan aerogel derived from the shells of shellfish and crustaceans. With this spray, bananas can stay fresh for up to 12 days.

The chinese researchers, from Tianjin University of Science and Technology, presented their findings at a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia.

Lead researcher Dr Xihong Li said, "We found that by spraying green bananas with a chitosan aerogel, we can keep bananas fresh for up to 12 days."

"We have developed a way to keep bananas green for a longer time and inhibit the rapid ripening that occurs. Such a coating could be used at home by consumers, in supermarkets or during shipment of bananas," he added.

Chitosan keeping fruits and vegetables stay fresh by killing the bacteria that make the decay occurs, this is the first study to prove that the substance could be used to slow down the process of ripening bananas. Bananas are usually removed while still green.

The process of maturation depends on a warm and humid conditions, similar to the natural maturation process. Bananas are beginning to mature on contact with ethene gas, chemicals product of banana. That's why bananas mature faster when stored in a sealed bag so that the gas accumulates.

Unfortunately for consumers, the team is still investigating how to make a commercially viable product, which means finding a replacement for an ingredient that happens to be unsuitable for general use. So for the moment, mushy bananas will continue to be a familiar sight in the world's kitchens. *** [MEDICAL DAILY | TELEGRAPH | SRI | PIKIRAN RAKYAT 30082012]

Why Killer Whales Through Menopause?

Menopause is a rare phenomenon in the animal world. But that does not mean there are no animals that had. Like humans, killer whales (Orcihus orca) females also lost the ability to reproduce at the end of their natural life.
This shows southern resident killer whales in the waters around the San Juan Islands, USA and British Columbia. Both male and female killer whales will remain with their mothers throughout their lives. Adult male killer whales are easily distinguishable from females by their considerably larger dorsal fins. (Picture from: http://www.livescience.com/)
Stopping the fertile marine mammals may be intended for an elderly parent totally to care for their children until adulthood rather than pregnant again. "Our analysis suggests that male killer whales depend on the parent. They had to fight hard enough to survive without the help of their mother," said Dan Franks, researchers from the University of York, England on September 11, 2012.

An important role of parents in caring for adult children up to explain why the killer whales have developed the post-reproductive longest in the animal kingdom. Individual female killer whales typically stop reproducing at the age of 40 years. Though they can live to be about 90 years old.

In a study published in the journal Science, Franks said the presence of the parent who experienced menopause males actually increase an individual's ability to survive. "But we did not find the same effect on female individuals," he said.

They also found that the mother's death impact the male killer whale. "Children under 30 years old females it is not affected by the death of their mother," kata'Franks. He speculated that the mother of killer whales are more focused on the survival of male children to ensure the maximum growth, so that in time it will deploy calf genes passed on.

"Killer whale is an incredible animal. Their social group really unusual. Mains and their male children are lifelong friends," said Emma Foster, a researcher from the University of Exeter. Foster research shows that killer whales have developed the longest menopause than in non-human species, so as to offer the certainty of survival for the older offspring. *** [LIVESCIENCE | MAHARDIKA SATRIA HADI | KORAN TEMPO 3999]

The First Planet in the Star Cluster

The new planets discovered around a star the size of our sun by astronomers from NASA. The difference is, the star is one of the few stars who gathered close together in a cluster, not a single star like the sun.

The first finding proves that the planet can appear in a dense star. Although the new planet is uninhabitable, star studded sky is a lot more than what we see from Earth.

The two planets discovered by NASA astronomers like Jupiter, the giant gas balls boiling heat because its orbit very close to their parent stars. The two "hot Jupiter" that surround the different star in Beehive Cluster, also known as Praesepe, a collection of 1000 stars that seemed crammed around the core.
Astronomers have discovered two gas giant planets orbiting stars in the Beehive cluster, a collection of about 1,000 tightly packed stars. (Picture from: http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/)
Beehive Cluster is an open cluster, or group of stars born at the same time and emerge from a giant cloud of the same material, so that the stars that have a similar chemical composition.
Unlike the majority of star-forming-spread shortly after the young stars are still close to each other due to mutual gravitational attraction.

"We detect more planets that can thrive in extreme environments and diverse as this cluster," said Mario R. Perez, NASA's astrophysics scientist in the origins of solar system program. "Our galaxy has more than 1,000 open clusters like this, which could potentially have a physical condition that can be berths giant planets."
This image of the Beehive star cluster points out the location of its first known planets, Pr0201b and Pr0211b, or, as astronomers call them, the first ‘b’s’ in the Beehive. (Picture from: http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/)
The report, published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters on last week's mention that the two planets in the Beehive cluster named Pr0201b and Pr0211b, according to standard naming conventions planet. "They are the planet 'b' first Beehive," said Sam Quinn, an astronomer at Georgia State University in Atlanta, the principal investigator in this study. *** [SCIENCEDAILY | NASA | KORAN TEMPO 3999]

The World's Longest Bus Rolls Out

The world’s longest bus is being presented in Dresden on August 22, 2012. The "AutoTram Extra Grand" is a hybrid vehicle of 30 meters length. The three-piece bus, which can carry up to 256 passengers. "Due to its high transport capacity, the AutoTram bridges the gap between conventional city buses and trams, offering new possibilities for an environmental friendly public transport," the Fraunhofer Institute said in a press release.
AutoTram Extra Grand currently does its laps on the DEKRA test track at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, working through the testing procedure to obtain a single vehicle approval. (Picture from: http://www.ivi.fraunhofer.de/)
Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research the innovative vehicle AutoTram Extra Grand has been developed to combine the advantages of road and tram rail transport. While equipped with wheels and, hence, flexible in route planning, the vehicle is 30 meters long and offers 96 seats as well as space for 160 standing passengers.

As a hybrid vehicle it is equipped with an electric engine, which can cover a distance of 8-10km. A diesel-electric range extender works as a charger of the electric battery at each bus stop. Additionally, supercondensers enable to recover braking energy as electricity. According to German traffic law the bus turning radius does not exceed 12.5 metres. This bus was constructed by Göppel Bus GmbH in Thüringen.

"There is a lot of know-how invested in it - the computer is driven by a pretty clever steering algorithm," Matthias Klingner, the institute's director told The Local. The Autotram comes with a special steering system on its four regulated axles, which ensures that the back sections of the bendy-bus precisely follow the front section.
AutoTram Extra Grand, the world's longest bus. (Picture from: http://www.gadling.com/)
"Thanks to this patented multiple axis steering, the vehicle can manoeuvre just as easily as a 12-meters bus, forwards as well as backwards," an institute statement said.

"There's no problem with the manoeuvrability and stability, but we have to see how such a long bus affects normal city traffic," said Klingner.

Matthias Klinger also told The Local there has been a lot of interest from cities in the developing world looking to develop cheap public transport systems.

AutoTram Extra Grand will offer tram capacity on routes where it would be too expensive to build trails. Unveiling will take place near the famous Semper Opera in Dresden. This means that the new vehicle emits fewer pollutants than traditional busses, offers capacity to as many passengers as trams do while routes do not depend on an existing track network.

Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems IVI jointly with other partners including the Institute of Electrical Power Engineering, Technical University of Dresden, Wittur Electric Drive and Dresden’s public transport operator DVB developed and tested the AutoTram. Attractive for transport operators is the research group’s outline that purchasing and maintenance costs for the AutoTram are lower than for traditional trams. The bus is set to make its debut in congested Dresden traffic in October. Currently, it is undergoing tests in special facilities outside the city. *** [EKA | GADLING | FRAUNHOFER IVI | THE LOCAL]

Sinus Inflammation Patients Need Good Bacteria

Not all bacteria cause health problems. Patients with sinus inflammation, for example, it desperately needs bacterial to relieve illness.

The role of bacteria is revealed in a new study. Scientists suspect a chronic sinus problem is most likely caused by a decrease in "good" bacteria and the emergence of "evil" bacteria in the sinuses (cavities between the nose and the eyes.)

They suggested that "good" bacteria re-added to treat the sinus disease. The method of treatment is similar to the addition of probiotics to restore the balance of intestinal tract bacteria.

In a study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine issue of 12 September 2012, researchers analyzed the bacteria population in the sinus cavity of 10 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis, and compare them with 10 healthy people. Researchers identify bacterial species by examining genes.

People with chronic sinus disease have fewer types of bacteria in the sinus than healthy people. The number of lactic acid producing bacteria also decreased significantly. Instead, they found an increase in sinus C. tuberculostearicum bacterial species.
"Good" bacteria in the nose may help fight sinus problems in a similar way to how probiotics may treat certain intestinal problems. (Picture from: http://vitals.nbcnews.com/)
To test these findings, the researchers gave the mice antibiotics. "Good" bacteria in the sinus immediately die. Researchers injected C. tuberculostearicum bacteria. Rats were initially healthy suddenly showed symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis.

As mice were given lactic acid bacteria (L. sakei) along with the provision of C. tuberculostearicum bacteria, symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis not appear.

These findings also suggest that probiotic bacteria (L. sakei) can be used as a drug and prevent chronic sinus disorders. "This may be the reason why there are patients who never recovered," said Susan Lynch, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco who involved in the study. *** [LIVESCIENCE | KORAN TEMPO 3995]

Is It True That More of Extraterrestrial Life?

Is there life outside the Earth? A lot, that's the answer of a group of scientists who gave a presentation of their findings on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at the British Science Festival in Aberdeen.

Their conclusion was obtained after a number of new model equipment designed to test whether a planet capable of supporting life, by looking for evidence of underground water.

As quoted by BBC News page, appliances new model developed by scientists is indeed powerful. Instead of finding the water surface, the equipment was actually more astute to identify the presence of water constantly hot molten core of a planet due.
Scientists should not exclude planets that reside in colder regions. (Picture from: http://www.bbc.co.uk/)
"This development could mean more planets are found to be able to sustain life forms," said a spokesman for the research team. Their opinions challenged Goldilocks theory that has been recognized by a space.
Goldilocks theory. (Picture from: http://www.bbc.co.uk/)
  • A planet is warmed by two sources of heat - solar energy and internal heat.
  • The further away a planet is from its sun the less energy it receives and surface water freezes.
  • As the distance increases underground water also starts to freeze.
  • But if the planet is large enough and produces enough internal heat, it could still contain deep reservoirs of liquid water capable of supporting life, no matter how far away from the sun.
Goldilocks theory states, the planet must be within an ideal distance from the sun to support life. "Ideal distance from the sun allowing the planet is not too cold so that life in it could freeze, or too hot so that it can melt," said Sean McMahon, a doctoral student from the University of Aberdeen.

In fact, says Professor John Parnell, lead researcher from the University of Aberdeen, there are other important habitats for microorganisms that is located a few kilometers below the earth's surface, "Many scientists believe most microscopic life on Earth could live in that location."

McMahon said the latest research on this could be an important breakthrough for the search for signs of extraterrestrial life. Parnell added that the idea of the habitable zone is not defined narrowly only to the conditions on the surface of a planet. Conditions inside the planet layer also noteworthy. "This point of view will bring up a number of other habitable planets," he said. *** [BBC | TELEGRAPH | MAHARDIKA SATRIA HADI | KORAN TEMPO 3994]

Ancient Volcanic Eruption Destroyed Most Marine Life

Theory is one of the meteor hit the explanatory how the extinction of dinosaurs on Earth. This was evidenced by a giant crater in the Yucatan Peninsula, which is expected showered celestial 65 million years ago.
Researchers believe they have uncovered evidence of a ancient volcanic eruption that led to marine life extinction at 200 thousand years ago. (Picture from: http://www.sciencedaily.com/)
But the disappearance of the dinosaurs is not the only mass extinction of life on earth. Recent research indicates that the catastrophic events that have occurred 200 thousand years ago. This time, almost all marine life died.

Thomas Tobin clears sand from around the
fossil of a giant ammonite he found in 2009
on James Ross Island in Antarctica. (Picture
from: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/)
Mass extinction was caused by factors out of the earth, the volcanic eruptions on the Deccan Plateau in India. This massive eruption spewing aerosols that meets the Earth's atmosphere. Vomit fine aerosol particles that are suspended in greenhouse gases and warming-is what killed many marine organisms, especially invertebrates shells on the sea floor. "It seems that these extinctions occurred within a short time," said Thomas S. Tobin, a paleontologist at the University of Washington, Tuesday, September 11, 2012. The research was published in the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology.

Tobin and his colleagues collected marine fossils from Seymour Island off the Antarctic Peninsula. The island is to deposit thick sediments rich in fossils. They can get a lot of detailed information from the fossils. "The content of fossils at Seymour confirmed that in the period after the eruption of the Deccan, there is a mass extinction of marine animals," he said. Tobin hopes his research on Seymour Island can be proved in other places, such as in the North Pole. *** [NYTIMES | MAHARDIKA SATRIA HADI | KORAN TEMPO 3994]

Asteroid Collision in the Jupiter's Sky

Amateur astronomer George Hall
captured this image of an apparent
impact on Jupiter while recording
video telescope observations of the
planet on Sept. 10, 2012, from
Dallas Texas. (Picture from:
http://shortformblog.com/)
Bright flash of light near Jupiter caught on camera amateur astronomers on September 10, 2012. The light was thought to have originated from an asteroid collision with the greatest planet's atmosphere.

Like the previous nights, Dan Peterson of Racine, Wisconsin busy playing a telescope mirror diameter 30 centimeters in his yard. This time, he turns his telescope to Jupiter shining almost as bright Morning Star. That's when he saw the flash of light from behind the telescope. "Brightness lasted for 1.5 to 2 seconds," said Peterson.

Other astronomy lovers, George Hall, in Dallas, gave the same testimony. This time, he has video evidence of Jupiter fireball in the sky. The video he spread through photo and video sharing site, Flickr.

The appearance is reminiscent of light astronomers to crash strands Shoemaker-Levy comet with Jupiter in 1994. The collision produces a bright light in the sky Jupiter. The trail wound black imprint on the planet for a few months.

Spaceweather.com site, which actively monitors the solar system, estimate the fireball is an asteroid or comet that struck Jupiter at high speed. Collisions like this last occurred in mid-2010. Objects that hit Jupiter when it predicted a 10 meter asteroid. Asteroids of this type are found around the Jupiter. Some of these approaches due to the gravitational pull of Jupiter.

Reports from these amateur astronomers got a response from professional astronomers. Now astronomers from around the world to race directing their telescopes toward Jupiter. They hope to see the rest of collision.
This graphic of Jupiter by UK astronomer Pete Lawrence shows the location of the Jupiter impact region from Sept. 12, 2012, as seen through an inverting astronomical telescope. The impact site is located at longitude system II 335, latitude +12. (Picture from: http://www.space.com/)
Objects that fall to the surface of Jupiter usually drove at a speed of 30 kilometers per second. Radius of Jupiter, 11 times larger than Earth and a mass 318 times heavier than Earth make this planet can draw objects with very high speed. Ability to attract small celestial bodies are close to the sun makes the giant planet is considered the protector of the small planets, including Earth. *** [SPACEWEATHER |  SPACE | ANTON WILLIAM | KORAN TEMPO 3995]
