Earth was once populated by Balrog

About 60 million years ago, living crocodile species which can reach 5 meters in length and weighing up to 400 kg. The crocodile given a nicknamed "demons of terror" aka Balrog, like a character in the 'Lord of the Rings' movie.

More recently, paleontologists discovered fossils of these animals in a coal mining area in Cerrejon, the northern region of Colombia. After identification, a paleontologist named it as a type of crocodile Anthracosuchus balrogus, from the name Balrog.

"As ugly giant, Anthracosuchus balrogus 'rise' of mining sites after 60 years trapped in rocks in tropical regions of South America," said Jonathan Bloch of the Florida Museum of Natural History's research involved.

A balrogus has a short snout and large jaws and muscular, the general characteristics of dyrosauridae, family animals resemble crocodile who lived during the Late Cretaceous and Eocene.

Alex Hastings, a post-doctoral researcher from Martin Luther Universitat Halle-Wittenberg, said that the findings suggest that the crocodiles of today is not the life of a crocodile fossils 250 million years ago. Crocodile changes, not as many people suspected.

"It is clear that the four fossil specimens (belonging to newly discovered A. Balrogus) not resemble the dyrosauridae species found previously," he told IBTimes on Tuesday, June 3, 2014.

A. Balrogus is the third ancient crocodile species found in the Cerrejon region. The species of this group of ancient crocodile from Africa, but later migrated to South America 75 million years ago.

"This class of creatures offer clues about how animals survive the threat of extinction," said Hastings. Why, ancient crocodiles survive when many dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago, when it is believed a meteor hitting the Earth.

This ancient crocodile fossils found in the same layer where scientists discovered the Titanoboa, a snake with the size of a inter-city bus. Allegedly, an ancient crocodile prey of the ferocious snakes. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | IBTIMES]
