Sparta Hybrid Rally Racer makes Geneva debut

Obviously, at the Geneva Motor Show 2014 everyone was paying attention to the big name stuff – the Maserati Alfieri, Koenigsegg One:1, Lamborghini Huracan, Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren 650S.

However, a closer look turned up a few gems that nobody was talking about, mainly the Sbarro Sparta Concept, a hybrid rally car built by students at Switzerland's Espera Sbarro design school.

The Sparta Concept sports a mid-mounted Peugeot-sourced 1.6L four-cylinder that drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual. The students must not have thought that was sufficient, because they added two 100-kW electric motors to drive the front and rear wheels as well, which pumps total output up to 407-hp.

Remarkably, the entire project came together in just 84 days, so you can forgive the kids if it isn’t exactly showroom material. Underneath the fiberglass body is a tubular spaceframe chassis and low-mounted lithium-ion battery pack. All totaled, the Sparta weighs in at 3,080 pounds, just 300 heavier than a WRC car.

This is the second time that students have prepared a hybrid concept. And while the vehicle itself is definitely not destined for production, individual design elements and innovations might follow students to whatever companies hire them after completing the school. Somebody should seriously think about to put these things into production. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | HKCARWORLD]
