Gluten-free Diet is Not healthy?

Many the United States residents cut the consumption of gluten in their diet or avoid it. But nutrition experts say, if it is not done carefully, the result is not healthy.

In a recent poll, 30 percent of adults say they want to cut the consumption of gluten, even want to be free of gluten, according to the NDP Group, a market research firm conducting the poll. Gluten is a protein found in many grains, including wheat, rye, and barley. Protein is found in most breads, cereals, pasta, and many other processed foods.

People who suffer from celiac disease does develop an immune reaction to gluten, which ultimately damages the intestine so they should avoid protein. Approximately one percent of the American population had celiac disease.

"For most normal people, gluten-free diet is not a member! Benefits," says Katherine Tallmadge, a diet consultant. "Furthermore, the decision to avoid gluten for healthy people may have an impact on their health."

That's because whole grains that contain gluten, is a source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals that are good. "Gluten-free products are often made from grains made from beans that have been processed, so low in nutrients," says Tallmadge.

If you go on a diet, says Tallmadge, you'll eat a lot of foods low in nutrients. Study mempelihatkan, gluten-free diet will lead to lack of fiber, iron, folate, niacin, thiamine, calcium, vitamin B12, phosphorus, and zinc.

"You must adhere to a healthy diet without gluten, but you must have extensive knowledge. Yet many people who do not have it," says Tallmadge. People who adhere to a gluten-free diet may feel better because, in order to avoid protein, they also avoid the dessert and fast food so that their weight down. "It's mistake if they think that decreasing of weight due to a gluten-free diet," says Tallmadge.

Heather Mangieri, a nutrition consultant and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, agreed. "There's nothing magical about eliminating gluten that results in weight loss," Mangieri said. "Any of us that eliminates or removes cookies and candies from our diets, and replaces them with fruits and vegetables is going to feel better."
